Thomas , you & your party were able to catch your limit of nice red snapper during your 12 hr fishing trip , and some of your party were happy because I talk to them . The fish were so huge they had to cut the tails to fit them in the coolers . We do build our own “ Family Reefs “ , they are deployed in fishing zones allowed by the State of Alabama , and depending on what type of trip you choose depends on what area we will be fishing . The 12 hr trip consists of trolling out to the reefs within 10-15 minutes of leaving the dock , Trolling is Fishing also and is included with the trip , so you troll out then when you get to the reef , you bottom fish & troll back . When the sharks show up while fishing , it becomes feeding frenzy and almost impossible to catch fish . We know this because as a fisherman for over 50 years , we dive our own reefs , take videos , & pictures to monitor them but this is knowledge that land lovers don’t understand which is conceivable
This year the sharks are over abundant due to the protection of them & you waste valuable fishing time continuing to hook & fight sharks !
The longer trip allows you to get in the deeper water to catch a better quality of fish . Apparently some of your party had a difficult time winding in the big fish that you were put on . A dedicated captain will keep going spot to spot until he is satisfied that everyone catches nice fish , even going over the allotted time to make sure everyone is happy . It’s unfortunate you don’t see it that way .
