Background: Fishing has been my pastime since I was a schoolboy. After starting my professional career as an engineer in Male, we needed a boat for our recreational fishing near Male. After a while, I found out that fishing is better in remote locations away from the population, so I built a fishing lodge. Now running the boat and the lodge has become a very big part of my life.
Techniques: I prefer jigging first thing in the morning. If the tide is right I do a bit of casting. I also like blue water big fish. I still have a few fish missing in my log. I will get them sooner or later.

GT for a Newbie

A customer from Malaysia, Mr. Ben ,wanted just to feel a GT strike on a popper, because he had never tried it. So we setup popping rod with a 6 inch popper. . After few casts his buddy wanted a try and the cast was not more than 50 feet from the boat,.... Splash!!....GT smashed on. The guy couldn't reel in. Ben jumped in and started fighting the GT. . Ben landed his first GT!. Unsatisfied that GT strike his buddy, Ben wanted more. We moved to a new spot and ... Splash !! GT on.. oops lost. After half an hour another big strike but GT sprinted over the reef, predictably, line hit coral and snapped. Overall we had 7 more unsuccessful strikes and landed 2 GTs. Not bad for a newbie who wanted simply to feel a GT strike! Apart from GTs, we caught 5 more 2- 3 kg fish for and grilled for lunch.

Boat is good but the speed is slow. So, it took along time to change place. 2 crews are good but our captain’s not Mohamed Latheep and we’re not happy about him. We lost time in some places that no fish but he didn’t do anything such as change place until I instructed. We’ve got 3 fishes all day. However, we’re happy with many beautiful places and we’ll go fishing again in Maldives with other Charter. Thank you fishingbooker for your always good... More

Hi Piya. Thanks for your comments. And we will discuss with crew and take appropriate actions. Alpha Royale is a purpose built fishing Dhoni for multipurpose fishing and to have good relaxing time onboard. It is not a speed boat. And it is built to standard Maldives fishing fleet specification. The speed is 10 to 12 knots the best speed you can get among all fishing fleet Dhoni class. this Speed is also mentioned in the specification in the profile. Thank you.

The boat is pretty new and spacious. However, the fishing gears would have been better maintained to allow improved controls. A couple of decisions made to reverse the boat and bringing the line to the front of the boat les to loss of 2 big fish, what a shame….
