After two sensational months of fishing in Ucluelet, Reel Time Fishing Charters has returned to Nanaimo to finish our year. Our charters in Nanaimo and Ucluelet produced some of the best fishing I have seen in over a decade. And it hasn't stopped! Our first three trips back in Nanaimo this past week produced some nice hook-ups out in front of Neck Point, Pipers Lagoon, and Entrance Island. It wasn't until today however (Thursday, September 13) that we finally got dialed in as to where the fish where really holding and feeding, a place many local anglers call "The Brickyard". Fishing down at about 140ft with a "Kitchen Sink" skinny G on one side and a "Gold Nugget" coho killer on the other, we managed hook into 10 Chinook during two 4 hour charters. Many of these fish where 3rd year feeders meaning they where anywhere between 7 to 10lbs. The surprise however was that there where still a few 4th year spawners in the mix, 1 that took us for a good ride until he finally came undone. With the amount of bait we were marking in the area, I highly suspect these fish will move on any time soon. It was one of those days out there, 20 to 25 knot winds, big seas and the possible threat of rain. Yet they came and we went. Fishing was tricky due to the windy conditions. And, at first, I thought it was going to be one of those scratchy days, not a single bite in the first hour. But then we got near to the tide change and a famous island called the Five Fingers. Once we neared the Fingers, we had a double header. Once we arrived at the top (Northeast) end of the Fingers, it was non stop action. After an hour or so of hooking up with Coho and Chinook, the bite died off. We then made our way to Neck Point where near the end of the day, we pulled in a beauty, a fish that just topped the scales below 25 lbs. The winds died, the skies turned blue, and we ended the day with 2 beautiful Chinook and 3 hatchery Coho's. They came despite the weather. They saw the amazing fishing Nanaimo has to offer. And they caught the bug of saltwater fishing. They'll be back!

I say this every time we hook and land a fish like this: "Chinook Salmon are the best fighting, best eating and for sure the best looking fish in the Pacific Northwest." This fish (and a few others) was caught this past week (Tuesday, June 19) on a short four hour afternoon charter. Fishing in and around the Nanaimo continues to be fair to great for Chinook and Coho Salmon. For those of you who are wondering what we can catch due to recent changes in our fishery, the daily catch limit for every angler in the Nanaimo is 1 Chinook (over 24.5 inches) and 2 Coho (over 18.5 inches, hatchery only). I've been fishing the Nanaimo area for many years but have yet to see this area produce like it has lately. The typical run of fish that produces some great fishing and good numbers usually takes place during the last 2 weeks of April and the first 2 weeks of May. After that, the numbers of Chinook Salmon begin to dwindle. This spring however, our four hour morning and even afternoon trips have been producing 2 to 4 fish. It's anyone's guess how long the party will last. But while it does, we encourage anyone who enjoys the epic fight of a Chinook Salmon to take us up on a grand adventure. Great fishing continues in Nanaimo! Fish in the mid to high teens are being caught from the Winchelsea's all the way to the outside deep edge of Entrance Island. Over the past few days, Reel Time Fishing Charters has been fishing in close picking up many nice Chinook salmon out in front of Clark Rock (Piper's Lagoon) and the Five Fingers. We've been fishing anywhere from **hidden content** ft down on the rigger with a 15 lb. ball. Our favorite bait has been the Skinny G's, kitchen sink and bon chovy spoons. All in all, 2018 continues to be one of the best years I've seen for Chinook salmon in Nanaimo. As an older run moves on, a newer run seems to appear. This may be due to the abundance of bait fish in the greater Nanaimo area. To enjoy this incredible resource, book a trip with us now. Chances are, you won't be disappointed.
