Epic fight with giant sea bass

    8-10 Hours – Catalina Front Side4 adults

We had a great day with Captain Alan Finn on the front side of Catalina. He's friendly and very knowledgeable. He was quick to respond to several questions leading up to the trip. I really appreciated that we never stayed in one spot for too long. If there was no bite, he suggested we move on to the next stop. He wanted to move around to find the fish and that we did. We go one yellowtail (not many yellows being caught in Catalina in the prior 2 weeks), 6 bonito, many calicos and an epic battle with a 100 lbs giant sea bass (AKA giant black sea bass, released). It took about 30 minutes for us to finally bring the fish to the surface using 30 lb test on my friends 30+ year Penn Jigmaster 500 with the drag cinched down. Captain Finn provided us with top of the line gear such as Diawa Saltiga reels and Seeker rods, but you know how fisherman can be. We want to catch fish on our own gear. I highly recommend you try fishing Catalina with Captain Finn. He'll show you a good time.

    Reported catch:
    Yellowtail Amberjack
    Calico Bass
    Bonito

Ron, Thanks for the review. That video of you saving the black sea bass is EPIC. One to remember for sure. You guys were great to have onboard and you are always welcome back.

If you don't book Captain A's Charter, you are missing out!

    8-10 Hours – Catalina Front Side2 adults

That's right! I said it! If you are looking for a Captain who really cares about the experience they give you, then there is no other person than Captain A! We stayed in constant communication, he asked important questions like "is anyone a lefty? Any dietary restrictions?" He really tries to customize your trip! He & his wife (who we did not meet) supplied the most amazing subs for Lunch and KFC for a light dinner, with PLENTY of snacks, waters and soda to support our long day! The gear was new, and in amazing condition and we are not disappointed! While the current wasn't in our favor for yellowfin, we DID catch 4 legal sized lobster! This was a trip that I surprised my husband with for our 21st Wedding anniversary and knowing that we will eat fresh lobster for our Anniversary dinner that WE caught is nothing short of amazing! Ken was a top-notch Deckhand who was doing his best to get us on fish, and really helped us in a big way with the lobstering and all around great conversation! I ended up getting extremely seasick when my dramamine wore off, but Captain A had a bed in his bow that helped me to sleep it off! (make sure to use the Dorado pillow! haha!!) They let me rest, while the men took over and continued their excursion! This team will make you feel like family-We will definitely book with them again when the water gets warmer (and I promise to bring more Dramamine! Thanks so much for making our day (and night) special! Cheers!

What's biting with Strictly Catalina Fishing in Huntington Beach

Peak season is over, but you can still have a great time with a lot of fish. Yellowtail Amberjack are still here in droves, and so are Yellowfin Tuna.

Warmer Water.....Better Fishing

Jun 17, 2023 • Huntington Beach
We've had multiple trips this year both front and backside and conditions are definitely improving. Lost the big yellows on more than one trip to sea lions and light 20lb test. Nice calicos, sheephead and yellowtail are around on various areas. Good fishing for halibut too. Weather has been the issue with wind picking up in the afternoon and gloomy conditions on the backside. The fishing will only get better as this improves.

Catalina Scouting Report - June

Jun 3, 2022 • Huntington Beach
We ran the boat out to Catalina overnight on a sea trial for the new motors. All was running great. We found squid on the backside, but could not get them to float. We should have enough frozen squid for the season to fish the kelp and close to shore. Halibut have been biting close to shore. We did land a couple bigger ones in about 50' and just legals very close in 20'. The surface action on the East End wasn't wide open like the summertime usually is. Bunch of barracudas. No yellows or white sea bass for us.....yet. Good news is that we are good to go this season.

Backside Bite Update

Aug 29, 2021 • Huntington Beach
Conditions on the backside of Catalian have been good. A bit of wind in the afternoon, but we have managed it. Yellowtail are being caught once we get through the massive amount of bonito around the boat. Such large scools of bonito that hook ups are just taking seconds. Plenty of action near the shorline kelp to keep the action going. Bass, sheephead and barracuda have been in the mix. Floating kelp paddies off the island have not been producing for us, but we still try for those nice yellows and dorado. The recent trips have been great fun. Join us. Capt.

Great Day on a Busy Saturday

Aug 16, 2020 • Huntington Beach
We had a great day on the backside with a great group of guys. A birthday trip for Dad that didn't disappoint. Thankfully, we were able to leave early off the dock to get ahead of the unusually high boat traffic. Got into the fish with the morning bite scoring 2 yellowtail, bonito, calico bass and a few barracuda. The wind picked up late morning and we picked up anchor to troll until the tide change. More bonito on the troll. We set up again further down the island and ran into the larger grade yellowtail again. Dad landed his monster. We lost 2 other on short bites. The wind got the better of us, so we headed home about 2:30. Messy, but manageable ride back to Huntington. Awesome!!

Good Fishing on the Backside

Aug 14, 2020 • Huntington Beach
Took off Thursday am a bit early to beat the crowd at the bait barge. Lots of boats chasing tuna that showed up 6 miles behind Catalina. We looked and found they had moved too far West for us. We found yellowtail in a few spots. Hooked 4 and landed only 1. Some guys limited on calico bass. Trolling got us all the bonito we could handle. Double hookups on the troll all day. Mostly calm water all day. The wind did pick up around 12-1:00, but subsided after a few. A bit rough on the drive home.
