I recently booked an overnight fishing trip targeting bluefin tuna on the Torero (AF Sportfishing) , and unfortunately, the experience fell far short of my expectations.

To begin with, I had been communicating with Dylan, who I believed was going to be our captain. However, minutes before our departure, we were introduced to Dave, who was taking us out instead. This last-minute change was unsettling, especially since Dylan had been my point of contact throughout the booking process.

Dave and his crew appeared exhausted, having just returned from another trip and immediately switching boats to take us out. This fatigue was evident in their unfamiliarity with the Torero and the lack of preparation. The bunks seemed occupied, and overall, the boat did not seem ready for our trip.

Despite Dylan’s reassurances about targeting tuna, I learned from the staff at H&M Landing that no tuna were being brought in. Had I been informed of this earlier, I would have considered changing or canceling the trip to avoid taking a long shot on fish that were not biting.

Dave did his best under the circumstances and set expectations once we were on board, but by then, it was too late. While Dave and his crew worked hard and were not to blame for the overall experience, the lack of communication, and the change in captain were disappointing.

Instead of the productive fishing trip we had hoped for, we ended up with a 24-hour boat ride with minimal success, catching a few rockfish that were barely biting.

My brothers and I went on a full day trip with Capt. Dylan. From the start Capt. Dylan was communicative and friendly. He laid out a couple scenarios for us to choose between different fish to target and we choose to go after Mahi. After driving to our first spot, the Capt. was able to get our entire group bit and every angler almost limited out. We did a lot of cruising around searching for kelp patties after that and were able to locate another, but were unsuccessful in catching more fish from that point on. Overall, our group had a great time on board AF Sportfishing and I would definitely recommend and use this service again in the future.

This was our first family trip to the west coast and we were looking forward to spending some time on the water. Capt. Dylan didn’t disappoint! After a quick trip to the bait dock where plenty of seals and sea lions were competing with the birds for scraps, he had us on fish almost as soon as we set the anchor. We caught rays, shark, halibut and more. Capt. Dylan kept the lines in the water with fresh bait to make sure the kids always had some action on the line. Only regret is that we didn’t take more pictures!

Thanks to Capt. Dylan for this amazing trip! He was the best from A-Z! His knowledge and expertise is top notch! We did a morning 6hr trip. After the excellent safety briefing we head out to the deepest and farthest fishing spot we can go. We would catch a few and then move to a different location which we loved and appreciated. He wanted us to get a full experience (fishing in different depths, locations, type of fish). Even if it was just 6hrs, we think that he were provided the most experience and fun we can get for a full day! We caught about 15 fish (sculpin, white fish, rockfish, some type of sea bass and a cod?) some of them we have to let go because of size requirements. Best part of the trip?! We almost caught a shark! It was a hell of a fight! I was sore the next day! Probably took about 10-15 mins? til we have him beside the boat. We were planning to at least get a picture with the shark before we let him go (probably not very safe) but the shark bit the line and got a way. Overall, it was an action pack trip and I highly recommend this trip! I can’t wait to book this trip again! Thanks again Capt. Dylan!

Traveled from AZ for a birthday adventure. Dylan did not disappoint! Had an amazing adventure with many stories to tell for a life time. Didnt feel rushed or out of place. Dylan provided information and made our trip more than we could have ever expected. Cant wait to get out on our next adventure.
