I booked this trip and specifically asked to look for roosterfish first. Whoever responded to me assured me that we would fish for them first. When we got onto the boat, we told them that, and the captain was NOT prepared to look for roosterfish because we had no live bait. He encouraged us to look for tuna and wahoo. He gave us NO safety talk—we had no idea where life vests, etc. were located. The only talk he gave us is the location of the toilet! We head off into the deep blue waters. As we were trying to eat our breakfast, the captain gunned the engine, and we all began sliding down the boat. No one had secured the seat cushions, so we had to get the crewman to tell the captain (who was navigating the boat on the helm) to slow it down so we could snap the cushions into place. Not five minutes after that, the console on our deck slammed down on my friend’s elbow, side, and hand as the captain gunned the engine and we hit a big wave. The crewman told the captain who then quickly came down to check on her. We were scared that something was broken, but after about 10 minutes, she told the captain to keep going—she would be ok (she really wasn’t, but she was a trooper). This was BIG mistake #3 (my husband who is an avid fisherman said that was an amateur mistake). By the way, it took two men to lift the console and secure it back into place. My husband sat by the equipment because lures and hooks weren’t secure (mistake #4), and he wanted to keep an eye on things. Anti-freeze was leaking up from somewhere in the boat (mistake #5).
The 4-5 foot waves went down to 2-3 foot waves, thank goodness. We saw many pods of dolphins, which was nice to see, but my husband said that they were chasing the fish away, and we should have fished in other spots (mistake #6). At about 11:30, with only one nibble at the lure, we told the captain to go in. We got back to the beach, and we pointed out all that was wrong with the trip, and I mentioned how disappointed I was because we didn’t go roosterfishing. He apologized profusely about what happened to my friend, said he didn’t know that roosterfish was our priority, and didn’t charge us the remaining amount for the trip. I’ve fished in Cabo, the Florida Keys, the Gulf of Mexico, Cabo San Lucas—this is the WORST trip ever!

We’re deeply sorry to hear about the accident involving your friend during the trip. Our crew acted promptly with the resources available at the time, although we acknowledge that some aspects could have been handled better. It’s regrettable that there was misinformation about your friend’s condition, as it hindered our ability to provide the necessary assistance promptly. Transparency is crucial in such situations, and had we been informed accurately, we would have taken immediate action as required.

We want to emphasize that the events of that day were an anomaly and do not reflect the usual standard of our fishing experiences. As a gesture of goodwill, we’ve waived the remaining balance of $900 as a recognition of the challenges faced during your trip.

Within 45 minutes of lines in, one 25 lb tuna, one 40 pound Wahoo, one 20 lb Dorado. Ended up 1/2 day trip with 8 more Dorado and hooked up on sailfish for 8 minutes. Great trip and only 4 miles out. Pura Vita !
