After several days of unusual San Francisco-style fog in the area, we were treated to a beautiful warm and sun-filled afternoon of fishing for New Year’s Day.  Captain Brandon was loaded with bait and ready to go early (we showed up 30 min ahead of schedule).  Marina location is a prime spot in the heart of Naples marina.  Easy parking and easy to find the boat.  Captain Brandon is a Naples lifer that has been fishing these waters his whole life… meaning he knows all the ledges, wrecks, and other underwater structures where the fish are hiding.  And he was more than happy to share his knowledge and answer all of our questions about fishing the area throughout the year.  Spent the day about 14 miles out (40-50 feet depth).  Given the time of year, we were bottom fishing and caught loads of snapper (fish tacos for dinner!) and a surprising exotic diversity of species that we released but kept things interesting for the group too.  Nice sized flounder was the surprise catch of the day (another addition to our dinner).  And a few massive Goliath groupers escaped before we could reel them all the way in… but kept everyone excited for the hunt (cue the fish stories).  The crew worked really hard to keep our lines baited and maxed our time fishing.  Fantastic experience for the whole group (6 of us).  Look forward to going back with the same boat and testing spring and summer seasons for other kinds of fish!
