Spring has sprung and so have the bass! With the fish mainly into the post spawn season now and the weather becoming consistent, the bite on Orlando’s Lake Toho has become very consistent. We’re averaging 15-20 bass on our 4 hour charters with our captains getting over 30 some days. The size has been good also, 3 pounders have been the average size with 4 pounders being very common, along with 7+ pounders being reeled in by a few of our charters everyday! All in all the lake is setting up for a killer summer of fishing with areas of the lake being opened that haven’t been fishable in years because of all the topped out grass, since they sprayed much of the grass back in February. With the bass being in the post spawn, the bulk of the bass have moved out of the shallower spawning flats. While there are still fish to be caught up on the outside edges of the kissimmee grass and lily pads, most of the bass have moved offshore into the hydrilla, peppergrass, and eelgrass. You want to look for submerged hydrilla and eelgrass, not matted out to the top, and for the peppergrass you want to fish the outside edges of the topped out grass. Once you’re on one of these offshore grass patches a number of lures have been working. Flukes, jerkbaits, speedworms, chatterbaits, and rattletraps have all been producing fish daily. But if you’re looking to book a charter, than wild shiners is what I would recommend using. You’ll get the most out of your day with them catching both bigger numbers and bigger fish. With it being in the middle of the spawn here the bass are spread out throughout the lake. They don’t all spawn at once here and it’s a long drawn out process that usually happens over 2 months. There are bass to be caught up shallow and there’s still plenty offshore still waiting for their moment to move up. Both Lake Toho and Lake Cypress have been fishing well on the chain. Right now on Toho with all the grass in the lake, the bass are loading up in the holes that are left in the hydrilla and even in some of the thick hydrilla that’s just below the surface. Shiners have been the best bite especially if you’re looking for that one big one. But for artificials, dead sticking flukes in the hydrilla holes, jerkbaits (where the grass is thin enough), speedworms reeled over the thicker hydrilla, and senkos have all been producing fish. This is our peak season for catching trophy size bass here. So there’s no better time to be bass fishing Lake Toho. The bass fishing on Orlando's Lake Toho this fall remains excellent. While the lake is filling up with hydrilla and peppergrass, the remaining areas are loaded with bass. Once you get in one of the areas that are still fishable 20-30 fish days are still the average on our charters. And if you're looking for a big one, this is a great time. As temps begin to cool down we're getting 7+ pound bass more and more frequently. Finding large holes in the grass is the key. There's a lot of hydrilla and peppergrass on the lake, more than I've ever seen. It's at least at 70% coverage right now. While the state does have plans to spray and kill off parts of it in the near future, there's still open areas right now that are leading to some productive fishing days. Once you find one of these open areas, a whole range of lures can be used to catch them and it just depends on the weather that day what will work the best. Early topwater has been working, with jerkbaits and rattletraps working if they're schooling in the open. Around the thicker hydrilla, speedworms, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits have been productive. And of course if all else fails, flukes have been working throughout all the areas and conditions. But the best bet of all for getting both the big ones and the most numbers has been on large golden wild shiners. Even with all the grass on the lake right now, it's still producing like it always has and it's been a lot of fun. The bass fishing on Lake Toho this summer has been some of the most consistent we’ve ever seen, and it’s due to some unique circumstances. Right now we have more hydrilla on the lake than ever before, and the invasive grass has actually made for some excellent bass fishing. The water, which typically has a algae bloom at this time of year, is the cleanest I have ever seen during the summer, and the bass are loving it. We are averaging an incredible 30+ bass a day right now on just our 4 hour trips. With 40+ fish days happening multiple times a week. The bass are schooling up like crazy in the large open areas out in the offshore hydrilla, and once you find one of these schools, it’s just one after another. The bulk of the fish we are catching right now on our charters are coming off of shiners. With the live bait you can get in these schools and start catching. But for artificials, the bite has been largely on flukes, speedworms, chatterbaits, and jerkbaits. With some topwater action early if you’re in the right area. You want to look for large mats of hydrilla and peppergrass, throwing speedworms and chatterbaits around the thicker hydrilla, and flukes and jerkbaits around the thinner areas of hydrilla and peppergrass. This summer has been the best that I have seen in years for bass fishing on Lake Toho. So if you’re in the area on vacation or live around here, come spend a morning on Toho, and I promise you won’t be disappointed. -Captian AJ

Spring bass fishing on Lake Toho here in Central Florida is one of the most productive times for catching good numbers of bass as well as the trophy bass of a lifetime. The reliability of bass fishing on Lake Toho at this time of year is due mainly to the weather becoming very stable and in turn the bass fishing is also very stable and productive at this time of year. AJ's Bass Guides has been in operation since 1970 and holds the lake record of 16 pounds 10 ounces which was caught by Ed Chancy the founder of AJ's Bass Guides in the month of May in 1977 on a black grape paddle tail plastic worm. Captain Jamie Jackson caught the second largest bass out of Lake Toho weighing 15 pounds 8 ounces also in the month of May in 1987 on a rattletrap during the 1987 drawdown. Florida bass fishing in the spring is the best time of year for catching big bass on large golden wild shiners as well as artificial lures. If it is artificial lures that you are interested in, springtime is what we consider the best time of year for fishing artificials on Lake Toho. It is not uncommon to catch a 5 bass limit weighing over 30 pounds on artificials at this time of year. 2023 has been one of the best years that we have seen for catching trophy-sized Lake Toho Florida bass in a very long time. As we move into the spring months this type of fishing will continue and the outlook for this spring may be the best that we have seen yet for catching a Lake Toho trophy. Also 2023 has been one of the busiest years that we have ever experienced in the 53 years that we have been in operation and even though we have 9 full-time captains working for us we recommend reserving your date as early as possible while we still have one of our professional full-time Lake Toho bass guides available. The upcoming fishing season on Lake Toho is our peak season for the year mainly because this is the beginning of the spawning months here in Central Florida. January through March is when Lake Toho produces the vast majority of trophy-sized bass over 10 lbs and it is also our peak season overall for bass fishing here in Central Florida. The fishing is so good during this time of year because this is the time that the bass are in their pre-spawn and spawning stages which produce some of the best catches and some of the biggest bass during trips. Averaging 20 to 30 bass per day and good chances daily at trophy size bass over 10 lb throughout this period. Lake Toho produces more bass over 10 pounds than any other body of water in the nation and is considered the premier trophy bass fishing lake throughout the USA. The best methods for catching large numbers of bass as well as trophy bass over 10 lb are with the large golden wild shiners which range between 6 and 10 inches in size. During this time of year the big Lake Toho lunker bass become keyed in on large golden shiners before they go on to beds and spawn. This gives bass Anglers the best chance of any time of year to catch their trophy bass of a lifetime. Artificial lures can also be productive if you have had a spell of good weather in between cold fronts but the wild shiners are always the the way to get your best chances at trophy size bass out of Lake Toho. It is well known throughout the bass fishing community that this is our best time of year for fishing on Lake Toho for lunker sized bass, and this is also when our clients are looking to book trips with our captains to get their chance at a trophy bass. Because of this being our peak season we usually book up several weeks or even a month or so in advance with all of our nine captains.
