Hooked on Hoplias: Exploring the Feisty
Hooked on Hoplias: Exploring the Feisty

Today, we're delving into the captivating world of the tararira. Recently, we were contacted by a foreign company looking to make the most of their free day during a business stay in Argentina with an exciting 6-hour fishing excursion. We chose to take them to an exclusive spot for our anglers, where we captured these amazing fighting creatures. The balmy temperatures bestowed upon us a day replete with angling, leisurely strolls, shared tales, all crowned with the joy of a laid-back ambiance. Our camaraderie continued over a delectable meal and beers, the perfect companions to our angling anecdotes, all set against the backdrop of our river's unique panorama. Allow me to regale you with some insights into this remarkable species. The tararira, masters of repose, thrive on a varied diet encompassing fish, birds, rodents, amphibians, insects, and shrimp, among other delectable morsels. Renowned for their aggressive hunting style, armed with robust jaws and razor-sharp teeth, these creatures boast a square head and an almost prehistoric visage. Unapologetically territorial, they boast a lifespan of eight to twelve years, with instances in the Amazon reaching a venerable twenty years. Sporting a muscular physique that propels them through the water with remarkable speed, they flaunt a diverse palette of colors ranging from earthy browns and greens to mesmerizing shades of blue. For those in Buenos Aires yearning for a day of nature-infused fishing, this is the ideal choice. We eagerly await your presence!

Many people ask us why we don't have fishing tours of fewer hours. We, after 36 years of experience fishing in these waters, explain to you: you are going to be fishing in the widest river in the world!!! This is not easy, but it is terribly exciting my friend. With Delta Aventura Buenos Aires, you will be sailing and fishing in the Paraná Delta Biosphere Reserve. Designated by UNESCO in 2000 and expanded in 2007. It is located in the Province of Buenos Aires, in the second and third sections of the Islands of the Buenos Aires Delta (Lower Delta). To be able to do reasonably good fishing, in a natural and unpolluted environment, you need no less than 4 hours. They also ask us: Is there a concentration of fish in closer places? Yes, in sewage drainage areas and port areas very close to Buenos Aires. Due to the dumping of waste, these areas serve as concentrators of small fish that are attractive to hunting fish. The problem is that you will be exposed to water pollution, noise pollution that comes from port activity and environmental pollution that comes from Buenos Aires, with its almost eighteen millions inhabitants. For all these reasons and because fish usually choose to live in beautiful places, that is why we sail and fish in natural reserve areas. This is why it takes no less than 4 hours to enjoy nature and a beautiful fishing trip. Any questions, I remain at your disposal. Thank you very much and tight lines! Captain Mauricio

The lemon fish season is kicking off, our guide gave us the heads-up, down on the Atlantic coast, in the mix of offerings from this buzzing touristy city. And when he said "citrus," he meant getting into the action with lemon fish, that feisty opponent that anglers love for the thrill and the tasty rewards. They'd already pulled in some catches in the previous days, but with a weekend that was basically a windstorm disaster across Buenos Aires province, they decided to go all-in for a bunch of lemon fish. To do that, they went out with jigs, going after the fast swimmers and other bottom-dwellers. They did pretty darn well, considering it's just the start of the season. Bagged themselves 17 lemon fish. The crew of anglers had a blast, and around noon, which is usually a tricky time, they switched it up to some bottom fishing action, still using those trusty jigs instead of the typical bait. With this setup—lighter gear and braided line—they also hauled in some salmon, grouper, sea bass, and porgies. Picture this: runs, chaos, and fishing rods bending like they're doing yoga, all happening in this angler's paradise. You got your variety – salmon, grouper, sea bass, porgy, lemon fish, bonito, anchovy, and the classics like corvina, hake, anchovy, pampanito, and rays. Plus, if you're up for it, mixing it up with dogfish and sharks, but remember, those go back in the water. They're out there on a 10.5-meter cruiser, decked out with a bathroom, kitchen, cabin, and a chill spot at the back where up to 10 fishing fanatics can get in on the action. They throw in breakfast, fishing gear, club access, and the bait – it's all part of the deal. For its fishing, we use rods ranging from 20 to 30 pounds, equipped with baitcasting reels loaded with 45/50 mm nylon or 0.20/0.22 mm multifilament. It's a demanding type of fishing, where the guides need to work consistently, especially when using multifilament. The species allows for different techniques (trolling, spinning, jigging), depending on the circumstances and fishing location. The lemon fish party is just beginning, and we'll have several months of good lemon fish catches, one of the standout species in the Argentine Sea, no doubt.

Wear layers. It was very cold when the boat was moving, but very pleasant in the sun when we were actively fishing.

I think it’s a little unusual to catch dorados in rio de la plata in this time of the year but we reached out to the captain in advance to ask if they had been catching them and he said yes. We caught a lot of dorados and catfish

Fishing was a little slow due to the wind and high river (it was the beginning of the season and the snow runoff had the river running) but we still caught a nice rainbow and missed a few others. January is probably more ideal for the conditions but no regrets!
