Another Insane Evening on Lake Ontario!!
Another Insane Evening on Lake Ontario!!
June 21, 2024
It’s an understatement to say the fishing is insane right now! Justin and his son Javin are in from out of town for hockey games and had a break in their schedule and wanted to get out and do some fishing. Having fished deep sea in the Florida Keys, they’ve had some amazing experiences. Today would be one of them. We had to carefully watch the weather after the cells that came through yesterday but we got out at 330pm to a flat lake which made 35mph to the drop easy. We set up just east of the filtration in 100 fow and got two rods in before the first went off. Shaker on a spoon slider. Reset the line, and didn’t get the 4th rod in before a diver with Meat back 233 fired, 4lb king, and in my view the best eating size salmon in the lake! The screen was just littered with fish and we finally got all 6 lines in the water after a few more shakers then a diver took a hard pull but on the first reel down, there was nothing there! There were a few more like this throughout the day.. The deep rigger at 133 took a hit and we got it to the boat@pulling in an 18.5lb mature king. Followed by a hit on the spoon rigger that looked like a whale had hit it. Unfortunately it managed to free itself before we got to have a look at it. As we turned around at the stacks because of the weather in the distance and headed back to bluffers the first diver fired out 199, with a white 8” @projectsalmon.ca split personality can’t decide and meat and then the other diver fired with the same green version. Got them both in and to say the guys did an awesome job of getting it done! They were twins at 16lb and 17lbs.. The weather was definitely catching up with us so we decided to head back to the marina with a full limit for the guys to take home! Thanks for coming out guys! At the end of the day, we were 10 fish on 16 hits working 130-200 fow east of the filtration to the twin stacks and back! #legendboats #legendboatsmemories #legendboatssudbury #legendboatsbarrie #mercurymarine #minnkotamotors #humminbird #garminmarine #projectsalmon #streamside #fishingontario #salmonfishing #lakeontariofishing #lakeontario #kingsalmon

Bluffers Evening - Smackdown!
Bluffers Evening - Smackdown!

Today Lucas and his niece met me at the marina and we departed around 4pm and headed out to the drop setting up in 100fow aiming for 160-180 fow. We managed to get all the gear in the water and on the line towards the spit. We ran a deep rigger at 122 with oki kingfisher Twinkie rig; spoon rigger at 88 with slider and divers with white and green 8” @projectsalmon.ca split personality cant decide with meat heads. And on the long lines we ran one spoon on 200ws and one flasher fly on the 300ws. The Smart Troll system was showing a completely different picture than 4 days ago! It took some time before rods started moving, slow at first, two shakers, then the deep rigger fired, and went straight into the other rigger and got it off.. after we got the lines reset a diver takes a hit and pulls us out to 450 feet on the counter. Lucas got the fish to the boat and we quickly snapped a pic and got it back in the water. We weighed it a few minutes later at 23.5 lbs.. but back to the drop it went! From 6:30 pm until we pulled lines at 8pm we were between the filtration plant and the spit in 150-200 fow and we could not get all the rods back in the water! We had fish hit and get the rod set back, then another would fire! Diver, Rigger, Meat, Spoon! It was all working sometimes at the same time! Lucas and his niece worked the doubleheader perfectly slowing down for us to deal with the first one. At the end of the day it was 15 fish hitting the deck, on 20 bites from just east of the filtration plant to the spit in 150-200 fow. Oh I should say the screen has not looked this good in a while! The Greater Ontario Salmon Derby is gonna be awesome this year! We will have an entry for you! #legendboats #legendboatsmemories #legendboatssudbury #legendboatsbarrie #mercurynarine #projectsalmon #streamside #wekeepyoufishing #minnkotamotors #humminbird #garminmarine #fishingontario #salmonfishing #legendsportfishingguideservice #lakeontario

We started out early and were in the water and heading out shortly after 5am, I wanted to be in position and rods in the water for Sun up and the early bite, no sooner were we setup and heading south and the deep rigger at 88 popped and we were rewarded with a nice 18lb King in 150 FOW as we headed out. The water conditions had changed markedly from Saturday warming up to 56 on the surface and 44 down 40 feet. We continued out to 250 fow, and then turned around finding no change in the water on our way out. We took a few more mid sized fish turning around again in 150 fow and heading back out. Once we got to 220 we turned right and headed towards the spit on a diagonal heading in towards 200 FOW. We were checking the rigger and found not one but two small fish, one on each spoon. Now that takes some serious talent! On our way towards the Spit, we had the deep rigger with Flasher Meat at 77 go off and a diver with Flasher Fly, take a hard rip at the same time. Shortly into the fight the rigger was gone, and then like clockwork the diver popped off as well. We reset the lines and continued towards the spit, picking away at the fish. They bait was non existent today like it was last week. So the wind has changed things significantly. Heading back towards bluffers after turning around at the stacks, we managed to pull in a nice Coho on a spoon with a 200ws, All totaled we had 15 fish landed on 20 bites, 250 ws with flasher fly, 200 ws with spoon, 150 ws with spoon, Mag Slide Diver with Meat and with Flasher Fly, and deep rigger with 13” Project Salmon Glow UV Siick and twinkies, As always the shoehorns pulled fish, hot banana, bloody nose, custom painted one. It was a great day and everyone took home some fish..

Special Rules for Taking Trout and Salmo
Special Rules for Taking Trout and Salmo
June 27, 2021
A moderate steady retrieve will give the fish time to adjust to changes in water pressure. Trout and salmon caught in many cold water lakes are caught in very deep water. Bringing them to the surface is particularly stressful because the fish experiences a substantial reduction in water pressure. At 100 feet deep the pressure per inch is four times greater than at the surface. In this situation it is important not to "horse in" the fish but to bring it to the surface slowly but steadily. Fish brought up from deep water may need "burping." Burping is a method of expelling excess air from the fish's swim bladder. The drop in pressure causes the swim bladder to expand, increasing the fish's buoyancy and causing it to float belly up. Left in this condition, many fish die as a result of the surface water's warm temperatures or attacks by predators. But in trout and salmon, the swim bladder is connected to the esophagus, making it possible to squeeze excess air out. To do so, hold the fish gently on its side and gently, but firmly, squeeze the belly from the vent toward the head. You will be able to hear the burp as air is expelled from the bladder. Do not squeeze the head and gill area, as that could damage vital organs. Stimulate the fish to dive deeply. Once burped, the fish should be able to dive down to the deep cold water. But it may require further assistance. Two methods have proved useful in stimulating fish to dive. One is to vigorously thrust the fish, head first, into the water. The slap of the water, and the plunge downward usually stimulates the fish to swim down. Another technique is the "release when recovered" method. Hold the fish gently at the middle of its body with its head pointed downward at a 45 degree angle. In that position a gentle side-to-side motion (or slow speed of the boat if trolling) can be used to move water into the mouth and over the gills. As the fish recovers, it will begin to kick, and slide out of your hand. When its tail passes through your hand, give the tail a quick squeeze. This seems to stimulate the fish's swimming action, causing to dive with more vigor. Remember, the idea is not to catch the tail, but to compress it as it slides through your hand. When is burping and additional handling needed? Let the fish tell you that. Start by handling the fish as little as possible, i.e., flip it off the hook with needle-nosed pliers. If it is able to recover and returns to the depths, you have avoid a lot of handling. If it is unable to dive, the head first plunge may be enough or burping and the "release when recovered" technique may be required. Based on fisherman observations landlocked salmon taken from 30 feet deep can be flipped off the hook will do fine. Salmon from 60 feet deep may need some help to recover. Lake trout seem to be more sensitive than salmon. A lake trout brought up from 60 feet will probably need to be burped and given some help to dive back to deep water.

What anglers said about fishing in Toronto

Trolling for salmon isn’t like a high action sport or event. I have done it several times now my kids have fallen asleep. You sit on a boat cruise at 4mph and every hour you get a bite try to land the fish and go back to waiting. If that’s what you want to do then go for it.

Research getting fish home - shipping or carrying yourself. We planned to catch and release but in hindsight it would have been nice to bring some salmon home.
