Fresh Fishing Reports from England

Report – Brighton Marina | Sunday 3rd May **hidden content** With summer fast approaching, it’s safe to say the fishing is starting to pick up—although this weekend has definitely been a bit of a mixed bag. As many of you know, yesterday’s fishing was tough. But as they say, it can be chalk and cheese—and that’s exactly how this weekend has turned out. With the settled weather continuing, things can only improve. Today I had my loyal crew from Romania onboard. I gave them a call the night before to offer postponing, as the fishing had been hard going, but they were keen to get out there—bank holiday, nice weather, and worth a shot! With that in mind, I decided to keep things simple. We met at 8am sharp and set off from Brighton in calm, settled conditions. On the way out, we spotted some surface activity, so we stopped for a quick go at feathering for bait. Instead, we found ourselves into small school bass around the 1lb mark. After a bit of fun (all safely returned), I called lines up and we headed off to target bream. Once on the mark, we were into fish straight away. It wasn’t hectic, but steady enough—around 20 bream in the first hour, along with a couple of flatties in the mix. When things slowed around slack water, we decided to move. The afternoon proved just as productive. We shifted from the first patch of rough ground to another spot a bit further out, past the pier. The wind picked up slightly, but nothing to worry about. Before heading in, the lads fancied trying for some mackerel, so we headed east. To my surprise, we did manage to find a few—but only a handful. By 4pm, we were back at the marina to drop off and pick up our second crew of the day. Second Trip Our second trip was a one-hour mackerel session with first-timers Harriot and family, along with Matilda and her family. This one was a birthday surprise for her son—trips like this are always special, and seeing the smiles all round makes it all worthwhile. As mentioned earlier, I did let them know beforehand that the mackerel weren’t showing in big numbers, but they were happy to give it a go. After heading out, I noticed a few boats working the same area, so we joined them. I showed everyone how to feather properly and helped with the gear, and when we finally found a small shoal, seeing the kids’ faces light up made the trip. That’s what it’s all about. Two trips down, two happy crews. One more day of the bank holiday to go, then it’s back to maintenance! ? Hope everyone is having a great bank holiday and staying safe on the water. Tight lines, Captain Ant ?

Get to the boat on time. Don't treat the fishing trip like a booze cruise. Respect the captain and his equipment. Take sunscreen, a hat and sea sick tablets if you're prone to motion sickness. Be realistic about your expectations and enjoy the experience. Catching fish is a bonus!
