A Week of Ups and Downs

An interesting week. We tried around Motiti midweek and did well, with mainly tarakihi. Friday night/Saturday we overnighted at Mayor, had steady fishing and a good variety of species, including snapper, tarakihi, maomao, and trevally. It was a windy trip home, but pretty much on the nose, so comfortable enough. Sunday, a good forecast so we headed back to Motiti only for the weather to change completely for the worse, forcing us to the Eastern side where it was calm, but not much fish, a few snapper and a couple of tarakihi. Things eased a bit so we worked the middle ground which was pretty much a non event, a couple of big blue cod and snapper. An excellent crew enjoyed the day regardless, but a tough one. Monday we headed out to Mayor, the predicted rain didn’t show as Coromandel stopped most of it. We did get some on the way home, but the fishing was good despite a lot of current so a big improvement on the Sunday.

Recommend Captain Brett and his deckhand and their boat Motutere. Every thing i expected of a charter was carried out. They were both extremely helpful whether preparing bait, asking everyone how thy were faring and more importantly, untangling lines during the numerous tangle ups. Lastly i would recommend that people always take warm gear regardless of weather

Know that it is winter on a boat with a few people on board with various experience so if sport fishings you thing then probably not the trip for you but they do offer this option on different bookings. you will catch fish with this boat and captain

It may pay to advise clients with childrenchildren that in the lead up to Christmas there may be more 'Drinkers' than Fishermen on board. OK for adults but not so good for the 10-16 year olds. Brett is a great Skipper and the boat well maintained and equipped were it not for the 'over imbibers' the trip would have been fantastic and we will certainly book again - just not in December!
