TUNA/MAHI-MAHI or DORADO/YELLOWTAIL
TUNA/MAHI-MAHI or DORADO/YELLOWTAIL
August 12, 2023
Water temperatures are nearing 75 degrees and we have entered the awaited EL NINO! The off shore Paddys are holding big fish and it is getting better and better every day. Blue Fin Tuna in the 100lb class, big Dorado and Yellowtail, Marlin, Mako's and Yellowfin Tuna are sometimes only a few miles out! We have been seeing an Abundace of these large sportfish only 12 miles straight out of the harbor and at the 14 mile bank only 18 miles from the dock. Now is the time and RockenReel is ready to Roll. Five to Eleven hour trips allow us enough time to put you on the targeted spots however on the right day even a two hour trip can land you a beast. Mako sharks are your best bet for a shorter trip- they are right here in our back yard only a half mile out and its mako time RockenReel Sportfishing is skaying them right now. We are fortunate to have a dropboff from 500 feet deep to almost 2000 feet deep only 2.5 miles out RIGHT in FRONT of Dana Point Harbor only a ten minute journey from the boat slips, giving your charter a chance at landing all these BIG Sportfish at what we call the ridge. Good luck and good fishing my friends! DA A piint is most definitely the best place ti fish locally...ask anyone. This is because Salt Creek and tve Point are only five minutes from tve harbor and all the structure and kelp hold an abundace of fish waiting to be caught. RockenReel Sportfishing has a large luxury yacht and a fishing machine Off Shore Scarab so you have choices. Safty first, fishi g second and always GOOD TIMES my friends. Our 5 STAR reviews speak volumes. Please, come check us out...you will not be disappinted.

Water was cold for this time of time of year so there wasn't much action for yellowtail, tuna, or Dorado yet. July was fun, but will probably shoot for an August trip next time to try and get on some more meat for the freezer.

Don’t come with any expectations. Enjoy being out in the water and the opportunity to do some world class fishing.

We went early in the morning and it was a very smooth trip. A little on the cooler side but that was fine. The sun came out at the end of our three hour trip.

Have fun it doesn’t have to be a big fish to have fun and take a picture. Find a crew that knows where to go

It was our first time fishing in Avalon and would definitely recommend it. We limited out on tuna and also caught a nice California Sheephead

Considering that the fish are less active when the water is colder, we had a great time and had no trouble finding fish. Take a jacket to be sure you're not cold.

Summer might be the best time, since season is open for rockfish. And you can also target halibut, sheephead and bigger game fish. But even in winter (February) you can get lots of action fishing for sculpin, bass, and white fish.

Check the weather before you go out and pick a time where the water is warmer, this will ensure you catch the types of fish you're looking for.

Fishing can be hit and miss. Usually good fishing with a good captain, boat and waters. Have enjoyed good fishing for sculpin, red fish, and bass. Great harbor just larger to exit than others.

I think early morning fishing is the best. I suggest at least half a day. The sea was very calm, hardly any waves and easy to catch the fishes. If you go deeper into the sea, you should be able to catch much larger fishes.
