The weather in May is a gamble, we started off with overcast skies which made for a pleasant morning of fishing. Later in the morning the sun was out and got warm. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Also, Matagorda bay can get very busy with fisherman, so recommend leaving the dock no later than 6AM to get to the prime spots.

Lots of gaftops and hardheads. Not keepers but that’s not on the captain. Seems like the waters are infested with them.

Great experience with knowledgeable and friendly Captain!!! Captain Chad will put you on the spot, and help you catch fish IF you need help. Limited on specks and caught a few black drums. Highly recommend.

I’ve been on two guided trips in Matagorda and been on 3+ trips without a guide. If it’s your first time fishing in Matagorda, I would recommend hiring a guide to learn the area.

Go in the spring / summer when there are more fish. We caught a lot of fish but not a lot of keepers. Still lots of fun.

Getting around on shore can be tricky, we spent a little time the first day watching people come and go to see where it was safe to drive.
It is well worth it to pay a guide for a trip out into the bay. The harbor is very convenient and easy to find

It's the first time I have fished Matagorda in June, so I have no basis for comparison. This was a fun outing, even though the bite was tough. FWIW, I would do it again tomorrow with this guide. Very fun time.
