Fresh Fishing Reports from San Joaquin River

Water temps are still good!
Water temps are still good!
December 29, 2025
Water temps are holding about 54ยฐ on both sides of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers we fish on. We started out the morning from Rio Vista and went down to check the west bank. Dropped some jumbo minnows and cut sardines on top of some decent marks on the sonar. We didn't get many takers so we moved down to the San Joaquin side near Antioch. The water coming through 3 mile slough was muddy, but both sides of the river were fairly clean after the large storms we just had the week before. Once we settled into our first spot, the tide was just hitting high tide. We started with some cut sardines and caught a small catfish. Only a short time on anchor and the tide turned and started going out. We dropped live bait and cut sardines and couldn't hardly get the rods in the water before the first few fish took them. After the tide and current picked up speed from the outgoing, there started to be some weeds in the water clogging up our lines. We moved down to our next spot, closer to the Antioch bridge. Again, dropping live bait and cut sardines, and the fish were biting good. 12 fish to the boat, biggest striper was 5.46 pounds and several just short of being legal. We kept 3 fish for our guests that day and safely released the others to grow. The guests of the day were great to fish with and the young ladies on board wanted to catch their first Delta Stripers. We accomplished that and I'm sure they will be talking about this adventure in the days to come.

Sturgeon Season Opens with a Bang
Sturgeon Season Opens with a Bang
October 6, 2025
The much anticipated October 1 Sturgeon opener has come and gone, and here are the results: Wednesday 10/1: The first day is always the toughest, but this year we landed right on them. The fish started biting within 10 minutes of our anchor, hitting the ground and didn't stop for several hours. We ended up with 15 bites that resulted in nine Sturgeon landed to the boat, three fish that were lost mid battle, and three outright missed bites. You just can't ask for any more than that. Friday 10/3: On Friday, we went back for more of the same and found good action. Not quite as good as Wednesday, but we still managed seven really nice sturgeon to the boat for our group. Saturday 10/4: A totally different story for us on Saturday. We went back to the original starting point to find the fish had scattered, and we're not as cooperative as they had been. Which resulted in two fish after a couple of hours of fishing. We made one slight move picked up a third fish. As we were getting close to the end of the day, I decided let's give this area, arrest and take a look on our way back in. And, why am I glad we did that. On the final step of the day, the fish were biting in the bottom of the boat off. Within the last hour of our trip, we landed six big Sturgeon, including two doubles and two single hook ups, which gave us a total of nine fish for the day. We couldn't be happier for the way the season has begun. We are looking forward to a long season of fighting hundreds of Sturgeon for our clients. We still have lots of openings for October and November, which are sure to be really good months with lots of opportunities to catch big Sturgeon Give me a call or book straight on our website. Either way we're looking forward to hearing from you or seeing you on the water. **hidden content** **hidden content** Our schedule is open to book Sturgeon trips between October 1st and April 30 2026

Russo's is a great marina with friendly staff and good parking. Easy access to close fishing from the dock and easy to get to and from the freeway. June the weather gets very hot so dress appropriately.

They did say that you might catch more fish when the bay is a bit warmer but we were still very happy with everything we caught and would still come in June! Make sure to bundle up the mornings are chilly on the water but we were prepared and it didnโ€™t bother our kids!

You need to book a trip with smaller tide movement. We booked on a 7ft tidal change that reduced the chances of catching fish but Captain Ken has been on the water for over 40 years and put us on the halibut.

It was a little hot by the late afternoon. The weather was supposed to reach over 100 but it didnโ€™t feel as hot on the water as it did when we reached the shore/land. It felt about 10 degrees or more cooler. Love that delta breeze!!

Itโ€™s one of the best fisheries in the world and there are hundreds of miles of water to explore. Getting a guide like Frank is a great way to get started.

Not as good fishing conditions as other months, but you can still catch fish. We werenโ€™t able to catch any fish from the dock on Bethel Island where we were staying but much of that was limited by stormy weather. On a bass charter we were able to catch 1 largemouth bass and 1 striped bass. In February fishing is OK but not as good as spring and summer.

If you've never fished the Delta, this is a great starting point. All services available. June was a bit tough because of the post spawn, but whether or not you catch fish, being on this water is a treat. Beautiful place!
