Trip Summary
Hard Tails: A term us fisherman commonly use to affectionately refer to any members of the small pelagic tuna species that visit our waters this time of year.
Bonito, Spanish Mackerel and the coveted FALSE ALBACORE are slowly funneling into Western Long Island Sound this time of year. When targeting these speedsters its hard to remain calm because you have a chance to hook into some of the fastest fish in the sound. I will seek out the areas where these fish congregate, sometimes covering a lot of water. We looks for birds, and splashes. Then fire out lures into the mix. Fishing can be fast and furious once we find them. Casts must be quick and accurate.
These fish are fast, finicky and a lot of fun to catch. False albacore can dump 30 yards or more of line from your spool in seconds.
It is my favorite time of year!
*Sometimes while waiting for the fish to pop up we can drop down and catch porgies and seabass
