Hoping to go fishing in Kailua-Kona? Make it happen, with Playtime Sportfishing! Having logged many hours on these tides, Captain Shawn knows them forwards and back.
Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Shortbill Spearfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Skipjack Tuna, Giant Trevally, Amberjack, Short-Tail Red Snapper (Ehu), Sailfish, Bluefin Trevally, and more can be found in these waters, depending on the time of year.
You'll target your catch by light tackle fishing, trolling, jigging, bottom fishing, or maybe something more specialized in this area. Capt. Shawn also offers fly fishing, but you may need to bring your own fly gear.
Thinking of bringing the whole family? Kids are absolutely welcome! Children must wear life vests, so find out if the appropriate size is available on board. Feel free to bring your own snacks to ward off any mid-trip fatigue!
Your boat for the day is a 26' Sportfishing that can carry up to 5 passengers. It has outriggers, downriggers, a fighting chair, all the essentials no fishing machine can run without. There's a toilet on board for your convenience.
Capt. Shawn will supply rods and reels for you, as well as lures. Live bait is included, but it's good to ask about this so you know if you'll be catching it yourself.
A First Mate will be there to make sure everything is running smoothly. It's customary to tip the Mate 10–20% to show your appreciation.
You might need to buy a local fishing license before the trip. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain. Some species may be off limits or require a special tag, so make sure you know what to expect.
It's never a bad idea to bring bottled water, sunglasses, and sunblock (non-spray). Drinks will be available for you. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, so long as you avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.
Give yourself something to look forward to and book a trip with Playtime Sportfishing!
