Halibut, Lingcod, Cod, Chinook (King) Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Rockfish, and more can be found in these waters, depending on the time of year.

On these trips, it's common to bottom fish.

Children are welcome, so go ahead and bring the whole family along! Be sure to ask if child-sized life vests are available, otherwise you should bring your own. Don't forget to bring snacks to ward off any mid-trip fatigue!

You'll be fishing aboard a 30' Sportfishing Boat with room for 6 passengers. It comes with everything you need for a productive day on the water. There's a toilet on board for your convenience.

You'll find rods, reels, and tackle waiting for you.

There will be a First Mate on board to help your trip run smoothly. Mates work hard to make your trip count, so a 10–20% tip is customary.

Before coming aboard, you may need to buy a local fishing license for everyone in your group. Additionally, a federal Halibut Permit is required, and that must be purchased onboard directly from your captain prior to departure. The cost for this permit is $20.00 per person, per day. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain. Some species, like King Salmon, might be protected or require a tag to keep them, so make sure you know what to expect.

Some essentials to bring are a hat, sunglasses, bottled water, and sunscreen (non-spray). If you'd like to bring other drinks, just ask. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, but hard liquor is prohibited by law on board as well as glass bottles.

Great Capt and Crew. definately got us on fish
Full Day Shared Halibut/RockF/Salmo on July 26, 20262 adults

Had a good time on the ship. Great Capt who is genuinely concerned with everyones safety brief. From what he says he is probably the only capt that gives safety briefs prior to the start ov the trip. Which is great. hearing from other ppl that went fishing that day on other charters I overheard a few mentioning how they wished they would have gotten some warning about simple things like how tk handle a hook, how to walk on a boat, and. such. He definately has the safety equiment needed to keep you and your guests safe. he will get you on fish he has the technology and the experience to put you in spots that have fish its just up to you on setting the hook at the right time, but you will get the hang of it. For the price You cant beat it. all you do is show up and he takes carw ov the rest and you can have your fish picked up as soon as the next day with the fish processors he uses.

Great Trip
Full Day Shared Halibut/RockF/Salmo on June 24, 2026

We had an incredible experience fishing with Captain Steve and his first mate, Loren. From the moment we stepped aboard, it was obvious they take great pride in providing a first-class trip. Captain Steve’s new boat is outstanding—comfortable, well-equipped, and you can tell a lot of thought went into both the layout and safety of his guests. We caught halibut along with several other species, and Steve and Loren worked hard all day to keep us on fish and make sure everyone had a great time. They were knowledgeable, patient, and fun to spend the day with. One feature that definitely earned extra points with our group was the onboard bathroom (head). All of the ladies greatly appreciated having that convenience, and it made the trip much more comfortable for everyone. If you’re looking for a professional crew, a beautiful boat, and an unforgettable day on the water, I highly recommend Captain Steve and Loren. We had an amazing trip and can’t wait to come back!

Oh My Cod!!!
Full Day Private Halibut/Rock/Salmo on June 12, 20263 adults1 child

We had an outstanding experience fishing out of Homer with Captain Steve aboard the Sea-Gar. From the moment we stepped on the boat, it was clear that Steve is an experienced and knowledgeable captain who takes both fishing and safety seriously. His hands-on approach made the trip enjoyable and productive. He was constantly helping, sharing tips, and making sure everyone was comfortable and having a great time. Most importantly, his focus on safety gave us confidence throughout the day on the water. The Sea Gar is a fantastic new vessel. It's very clean, comfortable, and well-equipped for a successful fishing trip. Thanks to Capt Steve's expertise, we caught tons of fish and had an unforgettable day on the water. He was extremely engaging, and my children couldn't have asked for a better day on the water. If you're looking for a professional, hardworking captain who knows where the fish are and puts his customers first, I highly recommend Captain Steve and the Sea Gar. We'll definitely be booking another trip the next time we're in Homer! So we can get back to "Charli's Spot"

George, it was an absolute pleasure to welcome your family aboard. Charli surely had the Magic 8 ball working to perfection as she picked our most productive drifts of the day. I look forward to fishing with your entire family again soon in the 49th!

Great trip
on June 3, 2026

Capt Steve has us on fish all day long. We drifted all day, and even with the moderate tides he was able to keep us on the bottom and on fish while on the drift. Steve has a wealth of fishing knowledge and happily provides tips and stories throughout the day for both entertainment and education. I have lived in Homer for 10+ years taking trips with many charter boats and look forward to fishing with him again! Beautiful and clean boat, nice high rails to lean your hips into instead of banging up your knees while fighting fish. Highly recommended for first timers to Alaska. You aren’t just buying a seat on the boat. You are getting the Alaska experience your friends back home can only dream about!

Best Charter We’ve Done — Fish The 49th Is Hard to Beat
Full Day Shared Halibut/RockF/Salmo on May 30, 2026

This was not our first fishing charter, but Fish The 49th is by far our favorite one to date, and it is going to be incredibly hard to beat. We did a full-day shared charter out of Homer targeting halibut and cod, and Captain Steve and Ben absolutely crushed it. From the second we stepped on the boat, everything felt dialed in. The boat was spotless, the equipment was top of the line, and the whole operation ran smooth without ever feeling rushed or robotic. What stood out the most was how professional and squared away the crew was. They explained safety, answered every question, and kept the workflow moving all day. We always had bait on the line and lines in the water. They stayed ahead of everything before it ever became a problem, and you could tell they were working hard to maximize the experience for everyone on board. That kind of stuff matters, especially when you are spending a full day on the water with people you have never met before. The fishing was unreal. We absolutely slaughtered halibut and cod, which is exactly what we came for. Add in the Alaska views, great weather, and even seeing a whale, and the day was already hard to top. But honestly, the best part was the people. Captain Steve and Ben are just those kinds of guys you meet for the first time and somehow feel like you have known for years. My girlfriend and I felt incredibly welcome, had an absolute blast, and the whole trip had that rare kind of energy where everyone on the boat was just having a genuinely great day. They also had fish cleaned on the way back in, and we were honestly shocked by how much was already handled before we even got back to the harbor. We took some fish with us to cook later that night and had the rest processed for another day. It was smooth, easy, and let us keep moving with the rest of our day. Fish The 49th absolutely rounded out a perfect Alaska day. Not only did we catch a pile of fish, but we made new friends and built memories that are going to bring a smile to our faces for a long time. I cannot overstate how great this trip was. We will absolutely be booking again.

Capt. Steve's love of fishing began over 35 years ago in Florida while attending the University of Florida. During his time in the Sunshine State, he was a certified big game observer for the IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) and traveled the world in search of billfish. He has also extensively fished the waters of the Gulf of America, the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later on while owning and operating a large manufacturing company, Steve continued his love of large game sportfishing in the US and Los Cabos, Mexico. Simultaneously, he discovered a love of flyfishing. He has traveled the US gaining experience in Freshwater as well as traveling Central America and Mexico in search of the elusive Saltwater Grand Slam (bonefish, permit, and tarpon). If you can fish for it, Capt. Steve likely has done it!
