Southpaw Fishing Charters

5950 Peninsular Ave
Key West FL, United States

Capt. Brad Simonds owns and operates Southpaw Fishing Charters, a 43’ custom-built Torres Sportfisher, constructed in 2002 by Claude Torres, a distinguished boat builder. The boat is powered by a 700HP Lugger diesel engine, and comes outfitted with a comprehensive package of navigational and marine electronics, which includes a GPS/Chart plotter, multiple fish finders and depth sounders, several VHF radios and a radar by Northstar and Simrad.

The vessels’ two-tiered livewell system enables the crew to maintain large quantities of live bait throughout the trip. Inside the cabin, there’s a comfy seating area surrounding a dinette and a spacious cushioned bench. One of Southpaw’s more prominent features is its Tuna tower, which the crew utilizes for a variety of fishing techniques all throughout the year, and which they feel gives them the edge over many of their competitors that don’t have a tower on board.

Born and raised in Massachusets, Capt. Brad first started working as a Captain over 30 years ago, running a 55’ Holton out of Key Largo, and spending the spring months on the Yucatan Peninsula. After being at the helm of several private and corporate-owned charters, Brad decided to go independent and started the Southpaw Fishing Charters in 2002.

The Southpaw crew specializes in light tackle live bait fishing, trolling, kite fishing, bottom and wreck fishing for a variety of pelagics and resident game fish inhabiting the area, including Billfish, Tuna, Dorado, Kingfish, Snapper, Grouper and many others. Custom fishing charters can also be organized upon request, such as bluewater fly fishing, live bait kite fishing, tournament sportfishing, night Snapper or Swordfish trips, as well as fishing excursions to the Tortugas and other long range trips.

Booked short notice half day trip with Captain Brad on Southpaw.  Wednesday morning when we showed at 7:30 he was ready to go with clean boat, nice eqpt, & a quiet professional deameanor.

He took us out a few miles to a reef, dropped anchor and 2 older adults and 2 adult children caught fish for 4 hours.  Yellow Tail, Sanpper, Barracuda, Remorha, and a Shark.  We are from South Texas and not used to catching so many fish. Headed backed to dock about 11:30 and Brad expertly filleted fish for 90 minutes and then iced them down for us.

Matt is Brads 1st. mate and he did everything within his power to assit us any way he could.  These guys are pro’s and we were so happy with our experiience we booked another half day trip the following Friday.  On this trip we trolled for an hour with no action and then stopped and fished on another reef. 10 more keepers and a 6’ bull shark.

I would not hesitate to recommend Southpaw and look forward to my next trip to Florida to fish with Brad and Matt on Southpaw again.  Capt Brad and Matt are very courteous and keep Southpaw super clean and their eqpt. and bait are first rate. When in KeyWest give Brad and Southpaw a shout.  Next time we are in Florida we will fish Southpaw again.

My husband and I went fishing today with Captain Brad and Shaun were great. We caught more than 20 Dolphin fish. We kept 14 that Captain Brad cleaned for us. They were always moving and changing bait to make sure we were catching what we wanted. Overall a great experience!
