Fishing in Nootka Sound

Vancouver Island boasts world-class fishing opportunities, but only when you’ve had a taste of Nootka Sound fishing action, you’ll understand just how good they have it here. Whether it’s a freshwater or saltwater adventure you’re craving, there will be a charter on the sound to take you out and make all your angling dreams come true.

Salmon is the superstar of Nootka Sound, and for good reason, since you can hook a good-sized Chinook Salmon year-round. Other Pacific Salmon species also make their appearance in the summer months when fishing is truly legendary. If you want a change of pace, switch to bottom fishing and you can look forward to fighting top-notch Halibut and Lingcod.

Albacore Tuna are in the neighborhood only for six weeks in late summer, and anglers from all over come here to chase them. When you’re done with fishing, why not try some crabbing and prawning? It’s available all year and can result in many delicious dinners. Passionate freshwater fishermen can go after Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout, as well as Steelhead on the sound’s pristine rivers.

Because fishing is so good, you’ll probably want to spend more than one day on Nootka Sound. That’s why local guides usually offer multi-day trips with lodging and all the fishing gear included in the package. You can spend anywhere from 3–7 days here, enjoying gorgeous nature and even better fishing with your family or fishing buddies. Just pick your guide and fish on!

Rules & Regulations

Bear in mind that you need to buy your own fishing licence ahead of time because Nootka Sound fishing charters don’t provide them. If you’re a non-resident and want to fish for one day, you can buy a one-day fishing licence. Your guide will inform you of daily limits and other fishing regulations you need to follow while you’re on the water.

Nootka Sound Fishing Seasons

January
The beginning of the year is the best time to go Trout fishing and catch something bragworthy. Steelhead is the prized catch everyone’s after and in the saltwater realm, you can expect good Chinook and Halibut action.
February
Freshwater or saltwater, that is NOT the question in February, because you should try your hand in both. Whether it’s Chinook or winter Steelhead, good times on the water are one cast away.
March
Fishing for Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout is still strong, and fly anglers will have a blast. Bottom fishing often yields good “chicken” Halibut and smaller Lingcod. You can also do some crabbing for a tasty seafood meal.
April
Try your luck and go after Chinook Salmon or see if you can hook a Halibut or two that you can now keep and cook for dinner. There’s plenty of Crabs milling around the bottom, so there won’t be a dull moment out there.
May
As the weather is becoming warmer, you can sometimes find Chinook Salmon in shallow waters in the mornings. On the freshwater front, you could find some good-sized Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout.
June
The beginning of summer marks excellent fishing all around Nootka Sound. Spend one day on the rivers and streams, looking for Trout, and the next day, head to the ocean and chase anything from Chinook to Rockfish.
July
Coho have made their big entrance in June, and now, fishing for these acrobatic beauties is fantastic! Add to that the excellent Chinook bite, Rockfish galore, and freshwater Trout extravaganza and you’ve got yourself a party!
August
For local anglers, August means only one thing – Albacore Tuna are a-comin’! For six weeks, these speedsters will be moving through the area, and the action will be non-stop.
September
Enjoy the abundance of all five Salmon species as they swim around, always hungry and ready to gobble down your bait. Mix things up with some bottom fishing for Halibut and Lingcod, because why not?
October
The Salmon bite is still going strong, so try to make the most of it, before most of them are gone. Don’t worry though, you’ll still have Chinook and solid Halibut fishing even in the winter months.
November
It’s getting colder on the water, but that doesn’t scare fly fishermen, working their magic and catching some very good Trout. Feeder Chinook are still out there, so you can have fun reeling them in too.

December
Mild winters on the Nootka Sound mean that fishing fun never stops. Enjoy the Steelhead winter run on one of the rivers surrounding Nootka or spend your pre-holiday days going after Chinook Salmon and Rockfish.

Chris was a marvelous host and made sure to provide a very fun and memorable trip for my son and I. We started hooking salmon within 5 minutes of wetting our lines and wasted no time limiting out on several species. The scenery and experience were memorable and most enjoyable. I would highly recommend Chris as a guide and look forward to hiring him again next season. The boat was new and perfectly outfitted. Oscar Tessarolo

Don't bother looking further. James is simply the best. He's smart, very safety conscious, fun to fish with and knows Nootka Sound inside out. Great boat always in perfect condition. You will catch fish, likely lots of fish, and the area is stunningly beautiful. It is telling that other guides in the area respect James. And his rates are reasonable.
