Fishing in Newcastle

Newcastle, Ontario is easily overlooked by those who don’t know what’s waiting for them here. This historic settlement is located about 80 km east of Toronto, and it has been named one of the best small towns in Ontario. History buffs will enjoy a visit to Docville Wild West Park, while anglers won’t want to miss out the incredible fishing in Newcastle.

Easy access to Lake Ontario means you’ll have a whole host of fish on your hands. At different times of the year you’ll come across everything from Chinook and Coho Salmon to Lake, Rainbow, and Brown Trout. Add year-round targets like Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Pike to your list and it’s easy to see why anglers love coming here.

You can fish in Newcastle year-round, but most of the action happens in the summer months. This is when you can get your hands on the most delicious Salmon and Trout, so going out on a full day trip is well worth it. If you’re just getting started, a half day is a great way to learn and land a few fish. Those willing to brave the cold can also indulge in great ice fishing during the winter.

A great starting point for finding a fishing charter to suit your needs is Port Newcastle Marina. You can also head to Port Darling, about a 15-minute drive from Newcastle, to explore the Bowmanville Creek and Conservation Area.

Rules & Regulations

Before hopping aboard your fishing charter, make sure to pick up an Ontario fishing license for all anglers between the ages of 18–64. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, it’s best to head out with a guide who will keep you informed of all the rules and regulations.

Newcastle Fishing Seasons

January

Average temperatures in Newcastle hover between -12 and -3°C at the start of the year. Eager and hardy anglers can make the most of Lake Ontario by ice fishing.

February

Many people won’t be pulling out their tackle for months, but those who do decide to drop a line below the ice can catch Trout and Walleye on some parts of the lake.

March

Newcastle’s prime fishing season is still months away, but local creeks and lakes can be promising in early spring. Just make sure the fishing season is open before you head out!

April

The ice is thawing and waters west of Newcastle are already growing crowded with anglers eager to catch Trout and Salmon. Average temperatures are creeping up to 5-10 °C.

May

The weather is heating up fast, ranging from 7-18°C. Head to the mouth of Niagara River for the hottest action on Lake Ontario so far this year!

June

By mid month, many charter boats in Newcastle will be up and running. Now’s the time to come aboard and troll for Salmon and Trout.

July

The summer fishing season continues, with great catches on Lake Ontario as well Rice Lake. Walleye, Musky, Bass, Trout and Salmon – there’s no telling what you’ll reel in next!

August

In August, Bowmanville Creek receives thousands of Salmon and Trout as they make their way to the spawning grounds. If the season is open, this is a great opportunity for light tackle and fly anglers.

September

Halfway through the month, the fishing on Lake Ontario will lose its appeal as Trout and Salmon leave the waters surrounding Newcastle. Get out there and hook ‘em while you can!

October

By October, the height of Newcastle’s fishing season on Lake Ontario has passed. Some boats will keep running local trips, while others head east to the Bay of Quinte for trophy Walleye.

November

When all else fails, cast your line in Rice Lake! Be sure to get in on the action this month before the season for Bass, Musky, and Walleye closes.

December

Come December, most of the anglers you’ll see are diehard enthusiasts out on the ice. Check out what holiday festivities the Clarington area has in store, or head to Toronto.
