Whether you want to head offshore for an epic battle, fly fish the flats, or plumb the depths of the reefs, you’ll find a trip that’s perfect for you.

You don’t have to travel far to reach the playgrounds of some big game fish. Hit the 12 miles of water located between Puerto Aventuras’s coastline and Cozumel island for Sailfish, White and Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna species, and Wahoo. Looking to land that coveted “Billfish Grand Slam” of Marlin, Swordfish, and Sailfish? Opt for an 8-hour adventure. Newbies and families can try out deep sea fishing on a 4-hour trip.

If it’s tasty table fare you’re after, head southwest of nearby Cozumel Island to explore Palancar Reef. You’ll discover prized species such as Red and Black Grouper, Cubera Snapper, and Amberjack, as well as King Mackerel and Barracuda, and you can mix up your angling with a spot of snorkeling too. Most trips run between 4–8 hours, with 6 hours being the “sweet spot.”

Finally, if you’re looking to challenge yourself using light tackle or on the fly, there’s excellent flats fishing, too. Bonefish, Snook, Permit, Jack Crevalle, and Tarpon can all be hooked here. Trips start from 4 hours, and you can choose to spend anywhere up to a full day on the water.

Puerto Aventuras Fishing Seasons

January

January is an excellent time to go trolling for Kingfish, Wahoo, and Barracuda. If you plan on staying closer to shore, now is the time to go fly fishing for Bonefish on the flats.

February

Tell your captain to get the outriggers ready, as February produces solid numbers of Wahoo, Kingfish, Barracuda, and Swordfish. You can also head out to Cozumel Island and jig for Amberjack or bottom fish for Grouper.

March

Sailfish fishing really starta to pick up in April but you can still target them towards late March. Grab your fly gear and check out some flats fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Jack Crevalle, and Snook in the shallows.

April

April is a great month to aim for a "Billfish Grand Slam" and hook Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish all in one day. Mahi fishing starts to pick up, tool, so pick an offshore charter that will take you trolling.

May

May is great for targeting Billfish, as well as other pelagic species such as Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna. If you’re feeling competitive, take a short boat ride to Cozumel and check out the Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas.

June

June’s got plenty in store for everyone. Hit the flats for a fun day of fly fishing or head off the coast and deep drop for Tuna and Marlin. The possibilities are endless!

July

Inshore fishing is solid throughout the whole year, but July might be one of the strongest months. Pull out your light tackle and attempt an Inshore Grand Sam of Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit.

August

The number of Billfish starts to taper off in August but offshore fishing is still solid. You can target King Mackerel, Barracuda, and Wahoo, as well as various Tuna species, such as Albacore.

September

September is Puerto Aventuras’ rainiest month, so keep this in mind when planning your trip. This means there are fewer tourists on the beaches than usual, so surf fishing is especially favorable this time of year.

October

Billfishing practically comes to an end, but no need to worry! October is all about the reef fishing. Hit the Palancar Reef and get ready to bottom fish for Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack, and other exciting game fish.

November

Puerto Aventuras and surrounding villages host their Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. This is an awesome opportunity for tourists to experience something other than fishing!

December

December is one of the driest months in Puerto Aventuras and therefore, one of the most crowded times of year. Be sure to plan your trip ahead of time to secure a spot at one of the local hotels in the area.

I'm not saying that our boat and captain made sure we were able to catch fish but it sounded like most of the other boats that were trolling that area came up with nothing. Course it has a lot to do with luck but we came away with three amazing fish and everyone else got snookered, so I'm not sure what to say about March fishing in that area.... Amazing communication leading up to the trip. Great guides who worked hard and were super friendly. We caught a couple fish but rough seas limited our time. Most of our party, who are land creatures, didn’t feel well so we decided to cut the trip short. Guides would have continued and we would have caught more fish if we stayed out. Really tough season. Had 10 ppl and most were sick. Still put on a Hugh Mahi Mahi, a barracuda and a sail fish! On a four hour trip, we left after just 2 because so many were sick, but an increadible time!

We had a great time on a 6 hour trip but the 3 of us were worn out and decided to come back 2 hours early. Final count was 24 Dorado and lost 2 others. Several short bites as well. Threw back the small ones and the biggest, and last one we caught, was about a 45 pound bull. A LOT of action and Capt. Leo and the crew were great and worked hard. Will definitely book them again.

The crew was so awesome we had such a blast with these guys i spent my 40th birthday with my friends and this crew trolling for fish! Got to swim on reef we didnt have much luck but then they decided we go bottom fishing and sure enough we caught something and they made us a fresh ceviche on the spot! We then started trolling again and they made sure we caught somethign sure enough 2 blackfin tuna! Awesome time awesome crew!!! Will definitely be back!!!!

We did a 4 hour trip, and had a great time. Captain and crew were helpful and a lot fun to be around. We caught a couple Bonita Tuna and a big Wahoo. The crew even walked us over to a local restaurant in Puerto Aventuras after our trip and asked the chef to cook our fresh catch. Couldn’t have asked for more, and wish we could have spent more time in Puerto Aventuras. Would definitely do another charter with Carlos and his crew again!!

We had a large group of 8 - sons and fathers and had a great trip with Rodger and this crew. Great boat, plenty of room. We were one short of all catching a fish. Did a lot of trolling to try to get that sail fish, on the boys requests. Then stopped and drifted for about an hour, to get a few more fish. Crew was a lot of fun and always working on new rigs. They made us some ceviche and sashimi with our fresh catch and it was delicious. We would recommend this crew.
