Fishing in Sacramento

Sacramento is a fishing haven for California’s freshwater anglers. With two major rivers and several lakes to cast a line in, it’s no wonder why. If you’re planning to go fishing in Sacramento, pick a guide that will take you to some of the best spots around the city and get ready for a fun adventure!

Sacramento has lots of fishable areas that host a wide variety of freshwater fish.  Head to the American or Sacramento River and go after Steelhead, Striped Bass, American Shad, Sturgeon, and King Salmon.

Lake Amador and Folsom Lake are also great fishing spots right outside of the city. Both of them boast healthy populations of Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Sunfish, Perch, Trout, Catfish, and Crayfish.

The best part about fishing in Sacramento is that there are a host of guides and trip options to choose from. You can choose between a half day or a full day trip, depending on how far you’d like to go. You can pick a trip that will focus on targeting only one species, or mix it up and catch a variety of fish. It’s your trip, so it’s your choice!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re over the age of 16, you’ll need to purchase a CA fishing license. Some species require special permits and many have size and bag limits as well. Be sure to ask your guide ahead of time and familiarize yourself with the local rules and regulations before heading out. Last but not least, pay attention to the seasonality for certain species, like King Salmon for example. Regulations may change year to year, so if you’re fishing on your own, be sure to stay up to date.

Sacramento Fishing Seasons

January

Just because the weather is cold doesn’t mean the fishing ain’t hot! You’ll find pretty good catch-and-release action on the upper Sacramento River. Choose a fly fishing guide to take you nymphing for Steelhead and Rainbow Trout.

February

February is a good month for fly fishing. You can still target lots of Steelhead and Rainbow Trout on the Sacramento and American Rivers. Sturgeon fishing is also excellent in February.

March

In March, you can expect great Sturgeon and Trout fishing. Some other solid targets this month include Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, especially on Folsom Lake and Lake Amador.

April

Striper fishing gets kicked into high gear. You can expect to hook a few 3–5 pounders on shorter trips. On longer trips, you might get lucky and pull out a Striper in the 20–40 lb range. Patience is key!

May

In May, you can expect to target a wide variety of fish, including Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Striped Bass, as well as Sturgeon, Catfish, and Shad.

June

As summer approaches, anglers from all over the state come to the Sacramento area to drop a few lines. Striped Bass, Sturgeon, Catfish, Trout, and Shad are some of your likely catches this month.

July

It’s finally time to go after one of those famous Sacramento Kings! Salmon fishing usually kicks off in July but pay attention to local laws and regulations as they may change from year to year.

August

August is a fantastic time to hit the Sacramento River. You can expect to target King Salmon, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, and Rainbow Trout.

September

Salmon fishing remains hot throughout the fall. September is a good time to catch Kings in the 30–70 lb range, so bring some extra elbow grease and a positive attitude, and you’re all set!

October

There are some great opportunities in Southside Park, Folsom Lake, and Lake Amador if you’re looking to target Spotted, Largemouth, and Smallmouth Bass. You can also expect to target Rainbow and Brown Trout, as well as Catfish.

November

This a good time to target Lake and Brown Trout on one of Sac-Town’s surrounding lakes. King Salmon fishing is also still solid throughout November.

December

Salmon season is coming to an end, so be sure to get that last run in before it’s too late! Lake and Brown Trout are still taking the bait as well.
