Fishing in Jacksonville Beach

With the Intracoastal Waterway to the west and the deep blue Atlantic to the east, Jacksonville Beach fishing ticks all the boxes for quality saltwater action. Pair that with gorgeous sands, water parks, as well as great waves for surfing, and you’ve got yourself a memorable trip for the whole family.

Easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway means there’s plenty of inshore angling going on throughout the year. The sheer number of Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Flounder, and Sheepshead can keep you busy all morning, reeling in catch after catch. Expect a lot of anglers here in the summer when the Tarpon season hits. These hard-fighting creatures make for some of the most exciting fishing in all of Florida.

Heading offshore is another good way to spend the day fishing in Jacksonville Beach. Trolling for Mahi Mahi and Kingfish is always a good idea, but that’s only the start. Reef fishing is the main attraction in these open waters, especially for Red Snapper when the season opens. These trips are typically longer than your regular inshore outing, so book a full day if you want to make the most of your time here.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet morning of fishing in the backcountry or a 10-hour rod-bending adventure, rest assured there’s something here for you.

Rules & Regulations

When fishing aboard a licensed charter boat, your captain will provide all the necessary documentation. There are also areas closed off for fishing, but heading out with a professional guide will see you stay within the law.

Jacksonville Beach Fishing Seasons

January
Even though it’s cold outside, that doesn’t stop anglers from heading inshore to target Redfish and Black Drum. The waters are very clear this time of year, making for some great sight casting.

February
Now’s the time to get in on the booming backcountry action. Your best bet is to hit the shallow waters at the muddy flats, where you can find and hook dozens of Redfish as part of a normal morning trip.
March

March is typically when the water slowly starts heating up again, meaning there’ll be more bait fish available very soon. Until then, you can have a good time casting some flies for local Bluefish.

April
Sheepshead will make their way inland during spring, so you won’t need to go too far for them. The best fishing is tide-dependent, which makes heading out with a skilled charter captain all the more valuable.
May
Fishing for Cobia really takes off in May, so expect a lot of anglers cruising near the beaches in search of quality game. Count on them to give you a proper fight, but also a full stomach if you’re successful.
June
Now that the hot months have kicked into gear, you’ll want to start fishing as early as you can – ideally around 6:00 a.m. If you’re in the market for some big Trout. There’s hardly a better time to stock up on lures and head out.
July
Red Snapper season is short but very rewarding for anyone who decides to take part in the festivities. The hotspots will be as crowded as they’ll ever be, but boating a big Snapper makes all the effort worthwhile.
August

Tarpon fishing is on fire right now, so get it while it’s hot! If you’re up for something less intense, be sure to check out the Ladyfish bite. This is your best bet for a family-friendly experience.

September

Any angler looking to go further offshore to find the big boys like Sailfish won't be disappointed! You’ll be looking at a trip that’s at least 25–30 miles out before you reach the best trolling areas.

October

Fall is an excellent time for putting the waders on and heading into the long grass after some big tailing Reds. Many local anglers will use fly equipment but spinning with weedless lures works just as well.

November

With the waters cooling down, Redfish will start schooling in the backcountry near the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s a great time for longer trips in the flats, as 8 hours on the water is bound to net you a cooler full of fish.

December

The weather is usually spotty this time of year, but inshore fishing is great whenever the skies are clear. All it takes to catch a Bull Red in the flats is a keen pair of eyes and just a bit of good luck.
