Fishing in Vero Beach

This small Floridian city is known for its Atlantic-facing beaches, nature trails, and plentiful waterside activities – and a whole host of angling opportunities, of course. You’ll find plenty of Vero Beach fishing charters lining the shores, ready to take you exploring. With deep sea adventures and a maze of flats, inlets, creeks, and coves on offer, it’s easy to see why Vero Beach has all types of anglers truly hooked!

If you’re an inshore angler, prepare to have your heart stolen by the Indian River Lagoon. This waterway is home to thousands of flora and fauna varieties, and offers up scenic angling opportunities. Snook, Redfish, and Trout thrive here, and the lagoon’s many inlets are home to Permit, Cobia, Tarpon, and Trevally. The bite is consistent throughout the year, and you’ll find captains running both half and full day trips, suitable for families and experienced fishermen alike.

For adrenaline lovers, the fish-filled waters of the mighty Atlantic lie in wait. With an impressive scattering of reefs and wrecks located just a few miles from shore, anglers looking for tasty table fare will be able to plumb the depths for Snapper, Grouper, and Kingfish.

Head further out, and it’s a big game fish bonanza – Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Marlin and Swordfish are waiting for you. Opt for a full or extended full day adventure to make the most of this prolific fishery. Some captains even run extended or multi day trips to the Bahamas!

Rules & Regulations

As is the case with most Floridian fisheries, cast your line alongside an experienced Vero Beach charter captain and your license will be covered for you. Some of the area’s species are subject to strict bag and size restrictions, and your captain will be able to fill you in on all the details.

Vero Beach Fishing Seasons

January

You can get numerous Sailfish not that far from the coast. Inshore you’ll find Flounder, Tripletail, and Cobia, while bottom fishing produces Lane Snapper.

February

Stay inshore and bring in bags of Mangrove Snapper and try to find a keeper Snook. There are also Jack Crevalle, Sheepshead, and Tripletail in the water.

March

Coming to Vero Beach now will let you avoid the summer crowds but get equally good fishing, with Mahi Mahi biting day after day, with Sailfish, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna foraging nearby.

April

You can enjoy a beautiful day on the water with the sun shining and Wahoo and Mahi biting regularly. Spring Break can get even better if you manage to reel in hard-hitting Sailfish.

May

May brings a mixed bag. King Mackerel are displaying their finest skills. Be ready for Sharks, get light tackle for Jack Crevalle and Snook, and stock up on live bait to entice Sailfish.

June

Sharks, summer Sails, Tarpon, and Snook all make the headlines of what the early summer brings. Vero Beach can offer a lot to both less experienced anglers and pro fishers.

July

Fishing is on fire. Find a spot and head out into the Atlantic to land Sailfish, King Mackerel, and Mutton Snapper. The spectacle gets even better when you see Blackfin Tuna and Wahoo take the bait.

August

The summer heat is still on. Head offshore and land Amberjack, Mahi, as well as King Mackerel and Mutton Snapper. Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna, Bonito, and Sharks are regular catches offshore.

September

The Labor Day bite is on fire as Redfish go up in numbers, followed by Trout and Black Drum. Tarpon are still hanging around, and if you charter a boat offshore, you can get Amberjack or Kingfish.

October

October means Redfish, Trout, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Tripletail, Ladyfish, Pompano, and Jack Crevalle, as well as Tarpon. Mangrove Snapper are here in great numbers too.

November

Spend Thanksgiving fishing for Black Drum, or have a go at Tripletail as their bite stabilizes. Pompano and Spanish Mackerel are starting their winter campaign, while you can regularly catch Sheepshead.

December

There are schools of Mangrove and Lane Snapper, as well as Grouper near the bottoms. Monster Redfish forage inshore, followed by Snook. Offshore, the Sailfish bite is epic.
