Fishing in Avalon

Between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic lies the stunning resort town of Avalon. Known as the “chicest” beach in the mid-Atlantic, tourists flock here to get a piece of the action every summer. Don’t miss out on the fishing in Avalon. From the Cape May Wetlands, to the surf, to the deep seas, there’s something for everyone. So grab your rod and come along!

Types of Fishing

Most captains in Avalon will offer a range of trips, from the shallows to the deep, with some trips tailored to specific species. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a novice, there’s a trip for you.

Inshore Fishing

A mile out from the mainland, Avalon is on the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway. You’ll be on the fish in no time, so trips can last as little as two hours or as long as eight hours. Test the waters for your first time, or push your angling skills to the limit, as you bottom fish for hours to fill the boat with tasty Seabass, Flounder, Trout, and many more.

Nearshore Fishing

Head south and around to Delaware Bay or fish the surf and battle it out with some nearshore beasts. Head to the Atlantic and you’ll come across beauties such as Spanish Mackerel, Kingfish, Tautog, Rockfish, and even some monster Sharks. Try bottom fishing by jigging, or even try light trolling and you’re in for a productive and exciting day on the water.

Deep Sea Fishing

As little as 30 miles offshore from Avalon, NJ, you can find some prized deep sea fishing spots. While often overlooked for the continental shelf further out, “the Jackspot” offers equally productive fishing. Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Kingfish inhabit this area during the summer, giving you the chance to do some world-class fishing on an eight-hour charter.

If it’s Marlin you’re looking for, then a 10-hour or longer charter will take you to their hunting grounds. Along the canyons around 60 miles offshore, all the way to the continental shelf, you’ll find Blue and White Marlin, along with some delicious Swordfish. Serious anglers won’t want to miss out on the chance to do battle here.

How to Prepare

When traveling long distances, you’ll be fishing aboard a luxury sportfishing vessel. These beautiful boats come fitted with plenty of comfortable seating in the cabin, along with a toilet and kitchen. However, smaller boats on inshore trips may be open to the elements. Make sure to wrap up warm in the colder seasons, or bring plenty of sunscreen in summer.

All that’s left for you to do is grab your fishing license, bring some food and drinks aboard, and settle in for a productive day out. Book your next trip to come and see for yourself why Avalon is one of the mid-Atlantic’s most popular resorts!

Avalon Fishing Seasons

January
While there may not be any charters taking you out to sea in January, Avalon is at its quietest. This means that you’ll feel like you have the freedom of the town as you explore the boutiques and shops all day long.
February
Most captains use February to get essential repair work done to their boats, meaning the fishing trips are few and far between. Fear not, though, the 7-mile beach is always a delight, and you’ll have it to yourself.
March
The air that tells you that there’s something big on its way.  As everyone prepares for the season, you can take advantage of the discounted goods at the Shop-a-Holics week-long Festival!
April
It’s finally time to get back out on the water, with captains and anglers rubbing their hands with glee. Hit the Intracoastal Waterway or the nearshore shallows and land some tasty Tautog, Weakfish, and more.
May
The mid-Atlantic coast really comes alive in May with festivals and fishing tournaments filling the calendar. Don’t miss out on the chance to get out on the water, as the shallow water fishing hits its peak, too.
June
As the temperatures rise, so does the number of fish. Offshore fishing is finally upon Avalon as Bluefin Tuna make their way to the deep waters out in the Atlantic, while Amberjack and Mackerel fill the nearshore.
July
Peak season is well and truly here, as Mahi Mahi and Blue Marlin join the offshore party and the nearshore fishing is as good as ever. Go after whatever you want in July and you won’t be disappointed.
August
As White Marlin makes its way along the coast, deep sea fishing out of Avalon has never been better. Test your skills and strength against these beasts and you may land a Tuna or Mahi Mahi as a tasty treat, too.
September
With the number of tourists dying down, now’s the best chance of exploring Avalon and its rich waters. Take advantage of the warm weather and incredible inshore and offshore fishing to end the season in style.
October
You won’t believe that the fish still aren’t letting up. Head into the bays and nearshore waterways for a thrilling hands-on battle, and make the most of the annual Seafood Festival at the start of the month!
November
Avalon is one of the prime places to take a charter at the end of the year. With trips running until new year’s, you’ll always have the chance to fill the boat with plenty of delicious creatures for the holiday season.
December
Finish your year in style with an inshore fishing trip. See out a successful season in the best way possible as you try bottom fishing one last time to land beauties such as Rockfish, Seabass, and more.
