Matagorda Fishing Seasons

January

Temperatures will reach highs of 64°F, so a lot of fishing slows down. Speckled Trout and Redfish are still biting though, and Sheepshead is doing great.

February

Sheepshead continues to be great, and Redfish and Black Drum are still active. Join the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Competition throughout February and March. Plenty of activities for all!

March

Black Drum is great this month, while Redfish and Speckled Trout are doing well. Spend time eating fish at the Matagorda Seafood Festival – join in with the oyster eating competition!

April

In April, you'll see a lot of action in the water from Spanish Mackerel, Black Drum, Redfish, Flounder, Sheepshead, and Speckled Trout.

May

Tarpon, Redfish, Blacktip Shark, Spanish Mackerel, and more continue to show anglers an exciting fight! Spend the afternoon at the Matagorda County Museum and see history come alive.

June

On the first Saturday of the month, everyone can fish recreationally without a license. Compete in the Texas Trio Classic Fishing Tournament for Redfish, Flounder, and Trout.

July

Tournaments this month include the Texas Oilman’s Charity Invitational and the Matagorda Mermaid Competition. Tarpon and Spanish Mackerel are awesome this month!

August

Expect highs of 90°F in August. The bite is amazing wherever you go. All species are biting well, apart from Flounder and Sheepshead.

September

Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Tarpon are awesome this month. It will be a bit harder to catch Black Drum, but not impossible!

October

This is a great month for Flounder, Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Tarpon. There are plenty of Halloween spooky treats on offer now!

November

Visit the Lighted Christmas Boat Parade and Gumbo Cook-off at Matagorda Harbor for lots of food and drinks. Flounder and Redfish continue being epic, and Tarpon is still very good.

December

On land, head to the Christmas Market in the center of town. On the water, go after Sheepshead, Redfish, and Speckled Trout. There’s fun for everyone!
