Fishing in Tenerife
The largest island in the Canaries, it’s no surprise that Tenerife is also the most-visited of the popular tourist isles. Located far from land in the heart of the Atlantic, it’s also no surprise that fishing in Tenerife is popular with the masses of visitors. It’s an offshore fishing paradise. Target monster Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Spearfish, and plenty of smaller fish year round!
What to Expect
Saltwater fishing is the name of the game in Tenerife. Whatever kind of sea fishing you crave, Tenerife has it. From the shallow reefs nearshore to the deep waters just a stone’s throw away, it’s all here.
In the deep waters surrounding the Canaries, you’ll come into contact with some incredible-sized monsters. From delicious Tuna and Mahi Mahi to three kinds of monstrous Marlin, there’s no end to what you can catch.
You’ll mainly be trolling these waters to attract the bite of all of these prized fish. While this may sound like the chance to sit back and enjoy, remember that you’ll be on the choppy waters of the Atlantic. Get your sea legs ready for a bumpy ride offshore.
Experienced anglers will relish the chance to do battle with some of the ocean’s most cherished creatures, but beginners may find it difficult. Some captains enforce an age limit on children, so check in advance if your child is welcome aboard.
If you’re looking for a trip that will definitely cater to the kids, then a nearshore excursion is a great idea. Not so far out from shore, you’ll get on the fish right away without wasting time, keeping the kids entertained.
All year round, you’ll find some delicious creatures making themselves at home in these shallower, warmer waters. Target delicious Sea Bream, Seabass, Mackerel, Pandora, Dentex, and many more smaller fish to fill the boat.
Beginners can land their first catch, while avid anglers will go after hit, after hit, after hit. Grab your rod and reel and cast away as you bottom fish for a hands-on experience. You’ll also have the option to go snorkeling in these crystal clear waters. Discover the magical, colorful underwater world and teach the kids a thing or two, too.
Where to Go
Most fishing takes place in the more popular resorts on the west and south coasts. Facing the island of La Gomera before the Atlantic opens out, the fishing grounds here yield more bang for your buck than elsewhere. Hop on a charter out of Costa Adeje, Las Galletas, or Playa San Juan and you’ll get to fish the productive reefs and deep waters.
When to Go
There’s never a bad time to go fishing in Tenerife. While the nearshore fish are always available, the offshore pelagics replace each other throughout the year. Come in winter and Bigeye Tuna, Barracuda, and Amberjack will form the bulk of your offering. As you head towards summer, Bluefins and Wahoo will be passing through, before Marlin take over.
How to Prepare
All rods, reels, and a selection of lures or bait will be waiting on board the huge offshore sportfishing boats docked in Tenerife. Some charters may even offer a full lunch and a selection of drinks. All you’ll need to do is bring your swimsuit, a towel, and plenty of enthusiasm to fill the boat!
When holidaying in Tenerife, don’t waste your time lying on the beach, wondering what’s out there. Get on a boat and explore the wonders of the Atlantic!
Tenerife Fishing Seasons
Escape the January blues with a trip to Tenerife. Liven up your holiday with an offshore trip for Tuna, or fill the boat with some delicious Seabream or Mackerel nearshore.
As carnival season kicks off, the streets of Tenerife will be awash with colors and festivities. Combine this with a trip to sea, and you’ve got yourself a real holiday.
Spring brings with it new arrivals and you can start to find plenty of new fish in March. The rich offshore waters will yield some serious big game fish, while nearshore is as good as ever.
You’ll feel the season really start to heat up as tourists start making the most of Easter holidays and plenty of exciting fish make their way in for summer.
White Marlin start arriving in May, giving you the opportunity to land the catch of a lifetime. With the hot sun glistening down, the workout will be made even more intense.
When summer hits, you’ll want to make the most of the offshore waters. While Dentex and Pandora will be inshore, the true stars of the sea are Marlin, Spearfish, and Tuna.
The feast of Virgen del Carmen illuminates the island. A must-see for any marine enthusiast, the Virgin Mary is carried to a cruise amid wild feasting on sardines and wine.
Arguably the best month for offshore fishing, August has all the big names around. Go after Marlin, Wahoo, Spearfish, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi for a productive day out.
Come and catch the late summer sun and make the most of the dwindling crowds. Still technically in-season, you’ll have more of the beach to yourself.
It’s Amberjack and Tuna season in fall, so test your skills and strength against these strong creatures and head back to shore with something delicious for dinner.
Albacore, Bluefin, and Bigeye Tuna will be making their way through the Canaries at the same time, giving you the rare chance to go after all three in November.
See out the year with a holiday. The weather stays warm and the fishing red-hot, so what’s stopping you? Enjoy the quietest time of year and be at one with the sea.
