Fishing in Tenerife

If you’re looking for the angling holiday of a lifetime, the Canary Islands is a great bet – and the largest island among them is an even better place to start. Tenerife’s nearshore and offshore waters are sure to make any angler jealous. That’s why we suggest teaming up with a Tenerife fishing charter to make the most of it all.

Your local, experienced crew will provide you with all the fishing gear for your day out, not to mention the knowledge to put you on fish and reel ‘em in. On top of that, some Tenerife fishing charters even offer lunch and drinks, so you could be in for the whole package.

But back to the fishing, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the action is world-class here. The volcanic, rocky bottoms attract a range of impressive fish that grow to big sizes. Think Pandora, Dentex, Rays, Barracuda, and a number of smaller Rockfish, Pufferfish, and Wrasse. These are all fun in their own right but can also be used as bait for the bigger fish out there.

And the fish get seriously big. From oversized Amberjack to Mahi Mahi, and four kinds of Tuna, you’re already in for a treat. Then, there are Billfish, such as Blue and White Marlin and Spearfish, giving you the chance to land that bucket-list catch.

Beginners and families may want to stick to the shallow waters on trips lasting up to 4 hours or so. However, if you’ve got your sea legs ready and want to test your skills and strength, offshore trips can range anywhere from 6 hours to overnight expeditions. Tenerife fishing charters take off from marinas such as Costa Adeje, Las Galletas, and Los Cristianos, so take your pick and set sail for a memorable adventure!

Rules & Regulations

There's some more good news! most charter operators have fishing licences included in the price of your trip. That being said, it's not always the case, so check with your captain before heading out. Other than that, spearfishers will also need a special permit. Again, your charter operator will be able to point you in the right direction.

Tenerife Fishing Seasons

January
Escape the January blues with a trip to Tenerife. Liven up your holiday with an offshore trip for Tuna, or fill the boat with some delicious Seabream or Mackerel nearshore.

February
As carnival season kicks off, the streets of Tenerife will be awash with colors and festivities. Combine this with a trip to sea, and you’ve got yourself a real holiday.

March
Spring brings with it new arrivals and you can start to find plenty of new fish in March. The rich offshore waters will yield some serious big game fish, while nearshore is as good as ever.

April
You’ll feel the season really start to heat up as tourists start making the most of Easter holidays and plenty of exciting fish make their way in for summer.

May
White Marlin start arriving in May, giving you the opportunity to land the catch of a lifetime. With the hot sun glistening down, the workout will be made even more intense.

June
When summer hits, you’ll want to make the most of the offshore waters. While Dentex and Pandora will be inshore, the true stars of the sea are Marlin, Spearfish, and Tuna.

July
The feast of Virgen del Carmen illuminates the island. A must-see for any marine enthusiast, the Virgin Mary is carried to a cruise amid wild feasting on sardines and wine.

August
Arguably the best month for offshore fishing, August has all the big names around. Go after Marlin, Wahoo, Spearfish, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi for a productive day out.

September
Come and catch the late summer sun and make the most of the dwindling crowds. Still technically in-season, you’ll have more of the beach to yourself.

October
It’s Amberjack and Tuna season in fall, so test your skills and strength against these strong creatures and head back to shore with something delicious for dinner.

November
Albacore, Bluefin, and Bigeye Tuna will be making their way through the Canaries at the same time, giving you the rare chance to go after all three in November.

December
See out the year with a holiday. The weather stays warm and the fishing red-hot, so what’s stopping you? Enjoy the quietest time of year and be at one with the sea.
