Fishing in Androscoggin River

An Androscoggin River fishing adventure is the ideal choice for fly fishermen and light tackle enthusiasts. Flowing between Maine and New Hampshire, the river spans nearly 200 miles before joining the Kennebec and eventually emptying into the Gulf of Maine. As a result, you’re looking at hooking into a whole host of fish no matter where you launch from!

The “Andro” has productive stretches of both Salmon and Trout fishing. It was primarily known for its large Brown Trout population, before equally delicious Rainbows outnumbered their more aggressive counterparts. There’s also plenty of delicious Brook Trout, Smallmouth Bass, and Landlocked Salmon to cast your lures and flies for.

Whether you decide on a half day or full day trip, it’s bound to be a productive. Beginners hoping to catch their first fish will appreciate the shallow and easy-to-navigate waters at the river's start in Errol, New Hampshire. Experienced anglers will want to opt for float trips in the upper and bottom stretches of the river. From January to March, it’s all about ice fishing – so layer up!

There are several launch sites along the river, but the Errol Dam remains a favorite among fly fishermen. This is thanks to sections of water that are blocked off for their use only. Those in search of float trips will want to find a section of river with faster waters, in either state.

Rules & Regulations

The majority of charters in New Hampshire and Maine take care of your fishing licenses. In case yours doesn’t, all anglers over the age of 16 will need to purchase a license before heading out. Open seasons and possession limits vary across state lines, so doing your research and heading out with an experienced guide is recommended.

Androscoggin River Fishing Seasons

January

The Andro is largely covered by ice, which doesn’t mean you have to forgo fishing. If there’s been a deep enough freeze, head out with an experienced guide to ice fish for Pike!

February

Every year is different, but chances are the river is still largely frozen over. Get your last fill of ice fishing or pop into one of the many picturesque towns along the river!

March

Salmon and Brook Trout slowly creep into the Andro from the Umbaggog Lake. Do some ice fishing, weather permitting, or sit tight until next month when you can cast from a boat.

April

Salmon and Trout fishing season is finally here! If you're looking for Landlocked Salmon, then the waters flowing towards the Maine Border or from the Berlin Passing are your best bet.

May

The waters are the ideal temperature for Trout fishing and you’ll hook into Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. Whether you’re fly fishing or spinning, it’s one of the best times to be out on the Andro.

June

Summertime brings great fishing thanks to large insect hatches on the Andro. Seek out cold water tributaries that flow into the river for a variety of Trout in large numbers!

July

If you’re after Smallmouth Bass, this is the time to be on the water. The stretch of river in the Lisbon, Maine, area boasts a thriving fishery and you’re looking at hooking into double digits!

August

The waters are warm, which doesn’t agree with the Trout much, but the Smallmouth Bass don’t seem to mind! Explore the Maine side of the Andro for the best results.

September

The Andro is one of a few places where the fall fishing beats the summer offer. Both Trout and Salmon prefer colder waters and it’s an excellent time for fly fishermen to head into the Errol Dam.

October

The fishing season is coming to a close. Get your last fill of hungry Brown, Brook, and Rainbow Trout before captains pull their boats out of the water until next year.

November

The fishing season is over and anglers are heading home with their bounty. If you’re still in the area, hole up in a cozy cabin and explore the Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary for a last fill of nature.

December

There may not be anymore fishing to do, but you can still head into one of the many towns in Androscoggin County for some holiday cheer.
