Fishing in Ashley River

Excellent fishing in South Carolina is no secret and there are plenty of inshore waterways suitable for anglers of all skill levels. If you’re looking for a spot where you can relax away from the crowds, then the Ashley River fishing scene is a good place to check out.

Even though it’s not very long, this brackish, tidal river is one of the most popular angling haunts among locals. Here, you can enjoy solid fishing year-round and there’s a variety of species on the menu. Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Sheepshead, Blue Catfish, Black Drum, and Flounder are the most frequent catches all along the river.

New-comers are strongly encouraged to head out with a professional guide who can show them the best spots, whether on land or by boat. Charter trips usually last anywhere from 4–8 hours, depending on how much time you’ve got and your fishing appetite. The Ashley River is a great place for your little ones to learn how to fish and for you to have a good time.

Most guides are based in Charleston, but it doesn’t take much time to get to the Ashley and cast your line. There are also a couple more isolated boat launches on the river, in case you prefer to fish away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Year-round fun on the water, stunning nature, and plenty of fish to choose from – the Ashley River has it all.

Rules & Regulations

All freshwater anglers over the age of 16 need to have a valid fishing license before they start fishing, even if you’re going out with a charter. Your guide will tell you all you need to know about size limits and regulations and provide all the necessary equipment. So buy your fishing license, hop on board, and you’re ready for your Ashley River fishing adventure.

Ashley River Fishing Seasons

January
Fishing doesn’t slow down during the winter months, on the contrary, the fish love cooler temperatures! If you don’t mind hanging out outside, you can hook Sheepshead, Redfish, or both.
February
This doesn’t have to be the most uneventful month of the year, especially if you add some fishing to the equation. All species are active and targeting Redfish with cut shrimp could be very productive.
March
You can almost smell spring in the air, which means there’s some good Spotted Seatrout action in the near-fishing-future. Delicious Sheepshead also love this weather and will respond to a well-presented bait close to the bottom.
April
It’s officially spring, so expect beautiful days, nature in bloom, and lots of hungry fish. Whether you’re looking for some dinner or a fishing thrill, the Ashley River will deliver. Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Sheepshead are all in the cards.
May
You’ll hardly find a better month to target Spotted Seatrout. This is good news for anglers because Trout are known both for their smart fighting style and great taste. It’s a win-win combo!
June
It’s getting hot on and in the water, which is a sign for Flounder to hide in deeper cooler waters. Redfish, Trout, and Black Drum aren’t bothered by the heat in the least, if anything, it makes them hungrier.
July
The inshore action is excellent but it’s a good idea to head out early in the morning, before it gets too hot. Just after sunrise, there are lots of Trout feeding on the incoming tide and minnows are the best choice of bait.
August
It’s been several months since Flounder decided to beat the heat, but now they’re making a comeback! You can hook plenty for a delicious meal, especially if you cast your line close to the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers.
September
Even though the weather can get a bit unstable, the bite on the river is rock-solid. Whatever you’re in the mood for – Sheepshead, Redfish, Trout, or Flounder – they’re all there for the taking.
October
Spotted Seatrout and Flounder love this time of year more than any other species. You can find them all over the river, especially close to Oldtown and Orangegrove Creeks.
November
Treat yourself to a Thanksgiving gift in the form of an Ashley River fishing trip, you won’t regret it! Black Drum are congregating around fallen trees and wooden underwater structures, and Redfish like to hunt close to grass lines.
December
Be sure to dress warmly before you head out to the river, but when you get there, expect a good Sheepshead bite. Redfish won’t be shy either – they’re hungry this time of year.
