Fishing in Humboldt County

Humboldt County stands as a premier Northern California fishing destination, renowned for its rich marine biodiversity and stunning coastal landscapes. Nestled along the Redwood Coast, this region offers year-round saltwater adventures targeting prized species like salmon, halibut, tuna, rockfish, and lingcod. Anglers flock to Eureka and Trinidad for access to productive grounds in Humboldt Bay, Cape Mendocino, and the legendary Lost Coast—remote areas teeming with fish due to limited fishing pressure.

Diverse trip options cater to all preferences, from tranquil bay fishing for California halibut to adrenaline-pumping offshore journeys chasing albacore tuna. The Lost Coast's secluded reefs deliver exceptional rockfish and lingcod action, while summer brings king salmon runs just outside Humboldt Bay. Expert local captains leverage decades of experience to customize trips for families, novices, or seasoned anglers, ensuring memorable experiences aboard well-equipped vessels.

Beyond the catch, Humboldt County mesmerizes with dramatic scenery—think misty coastlines, sea stacks, and ancient redwood backdrops. Whether battling Pacific halibut in deep waters or crabbing in nearshore reefs, every outing combines world-class fishing with unmatched natural beauty. This unique blend of abundant fisheries and awe-inspiring vistas makes Humboldt County an angler's paradise.

Humboldt County Fishing Seasons

January

Start your year off with top-quality river fishing – all you need to choose is where you want to go! Winter Steelhead can be found throughout the county. The Trinity River offers up an especially productive bite.

February
Winter-run Steelhead fishing on the Eel River is something that shouldn’t be missed in February! The Trinity and Chetco Rivers also offer up plenty of action when it comes to this species.

March

Humboldt County's offshore season hasn’t yet opened, so keep your focus on river fishing. Steelhead and Brown Trout can be found in the area’s rivers, and the first Striped Bass show up in the Sacramento River.

April

April usually signals the true start of some serious Striper chasing! Make the journey to the Sacramento River, and focus your attention on the area where it meets the Feather River. You’ll be in for a Bass bonanza!

May

The weather is heating up, and you’ll find that the Salmon action is following it. The first spring-run Coho and Chinook can be found throughout the area’s rivers, and the Striped Bass action remains hot.

June

Head to the coastline and escape the heat on an adventure out to sea, where you'll bottom fish for huge Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish on the Pacific. Freshwater fanatic? Salmon and Steelhead fishing remains strong.

July

If you want to hook Halibut without heading all the way offshore, now’s your time to journey over to the Humboldt Bay, where you’ll be in with a chance of targeting huge varieties of this fish.

August

You can now target Albacore Tuna in both the bay and the Pacific, so gather your strength for a Tuna chasing adventure! The rivers are bustling with Salmon and Trout, and Striper can still be hooked in the Sac.

September
This month is all about two species – for saltwater fishermen, it’s huge Halibut. For freshwater enthusiasts, it’s Steelhead. Pick your opponent and then head to one of the many fisheries on offer to hook ‘em!

October

Halibut fishing in the bay is seriously spectacular in October. This is your best chance of hooking the “Doormat” varieties that you’ve probably heard about! Steelhead and Salmon fishing is on offer for freshwater fishers.

November

As the year begins drawing to a close, so does Humboldt County’s saltwater fishery. This is the last month where you’ll be able to head offshore to hook Halibut, Lingcod, Rockfish, and Albacore. Take advantage of it!

December

End the year in style by opting for a thrilling freshwater adventure. It’s all about the winter-run Steelhead during this month, and you’ll find an abundance of them in Humboldt’s rivers. The Trinity is especially plentiful!
