Fishing in Neuse River
Fishing in the Neuse River is a year-round adventure for anglers of all skill levels. The river’s lower course is where most of the action happens, from New Bern until it meets Pamlico Sound. In this area, the river widens and the current slows down drastically. This makes it fitting for species you usually find in the ocean. Catching Sharks in the river? It’s possible in Neuse!
The most common catches are Redfish, Striped Bass, Speckled Trout, and Black Drum. Some captains offer special trips for just one species, but you’ll most likely go after all of them for a “mix bag.” Since these fish are found inshore, you can reach prime fishing spots even on a half day trip.
If you decide to go after bigger fish in nearshore waters, it’s best to take a full day trip. Catching Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, Little Tunny, and Kingfish will take you closer to the Atlantic, so it does take some time to reach those spots. More fish species also means more variety in fishing techniques. Jigging, trolling, bottom fishing, or spinning – it all depends on what you’re aiming for.
Starting your adventure in New Bern is best if you’re going after inshore species. On the other hand, Oriental is a better departure point if you’re counting on nearshore fish. The city is 25 miles closer to the ocean than New Bern and you’ll reach the fishing grounds much faster.
No matter how you choose to spend your day on the water, be sure to purchase your fishing license in advance. After that, you’re all set to cast a line in one of the country’s widest rivers!
