Fishing in Neuse River

Fishing in the Neuse River is a year-round adventure for anglers of all skill levels. The river’s lower course is where most of the action happens, from New Bern until it meets Pamlico Sound. In this area, the river widens and the current slows down drastically. This makes it fitting for species you usually find in the ocean. Catching Sharks in the river? It’s possible in Neuse!

The most common catches are Redfish, Striped Bass, Speckled Trout, and Black Drum. Some captains offer special trips for just one species, but you’ll most likely go after all of them for a “mix bag.” Since these fish are found inshore, you can reach prime fishing spots even on a half day trip.

If you decide to go after bigger fish in nearshore waters, it’s best to take a full day trip. Catching Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, Little Tunny, and Kingfish will take you closer to the Atlantic, so it does take some time to reach those spots. More fish species also means more variety in fishing techniques. Jigging, trolling, bottom fishing, or spinning – it all depends on what you’re aiming for.

Starting your adventure in New Bern is best if you’re going after inshore species. On the other hand, Oriental is a better departure point if you’re counting on nearshore fish. The city is 25 miles closer to the ocean than New Bern and you’ll reach the fishing grounds much faster.

No matter how you choose to spend your day on the water, be sure to purchase your fishing license in advance. After that, you’re all set to cast a line in one of the country’s widest rivers!

Neuse River Fishing Seasons

January
Start the year by fishing for Redfish and Spotted Seatrout. The inshore action is great and you can learn how to fish if it’s your first time on the water.

February
Black Drum fishing is amazing in February. You can catch them on any inshore trip, but you can also find trips that target this fish exclusively.

March
Striped Bass are showing up in the Neuse River as spring approaches, so use this chance to land a few before the river gets too crowded with anglers.

April
High numbers of Black Drum, Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Striper promise an amazing inshore trip.

May
Time to go a bit further out and target nearshore species. You’ll find a good amount of Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Mako Shark.

June
With warm weather, the best action moves to deep water. Take an extended trip and you can target Marlin, Mahi Mahi, or Tuna.

July
It’s peak season for offshore fishing, and you can target Sailfish, Tuna, Marlin, and Mahi Mahi. Of course, inshore fishing is still a blast.

August
Barracuda and Wahoo are waiting in the offshore waters for any anglers keen to sail the open sea. Closer to shore, you’ll find lots of Tarpon, Redfish, and Black Drum.

September
Hammerhead, Mako Shark, and Spanish Mackerel are great targets for nearshore trips, while inshore adventures bring lots of Tarpon and Redfish.

October
The river offers a good portion of Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Redfish. Longer distance trips will get you False Tunny.

November
Bluefish, Black Drum, and Redfish are the best catch this time of year. You can target all of them together, or take a specialized trip for just one species.

December
Fill your cooler with Spotted Seatrout, Black Drum, and Redfish. They all make a delicious meal, so get ready for a feast!
