With the great Mississippi River flowing along the entire western border, as well as outstanding saltwater fishing, Mississippi fishing charters offer all sorts of adventures. Whether you’re a freshwater angler looking to wrestle a river beast or an offshore trophy hunter, you’ll feel right at home in the Magnolia State.

The Great River is known for monster Catfish that hide in it. However, there’s more to freshwater angling in Mississippi than that. Lakes such as Grenada, Sardis, and Ross Barnett feature some of the finest Crappie fishing in the world. With species such as Bass, Sunfish, and Bream also in the mix, there’s almost no end to what you can reel in.

If you travel south to the coast, you’ll find a vibrant inshore fishery. With species such as Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder biting year-round, you’ll always have something to catch. There are also plenty of local reefs nearby for those of you interested in Shark fishing.

Further offshore, you’ll find oil rigs teeming with Red Snapper and other food fish. And if you decide to ride 20 or more miles out, you’ll have the chance to hook into Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Billfish.

Most Mississippi charter captains are located in Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pass Christian. If you’re looking for a freshwater adventure, Tunica is a good place to start. Half day trips are a great option for families and will let you get a taste of inshore fishing. Deep sea trips require at least 8 hours as you’ll need time to reach the offshore fishing grounds.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing aboard a charter, you won’t need to worry about getting a Mississippi fishing license. However, solo anglers aged 16 or older will need a permit whether they’re fishing freshwater or saltwater.

January

The start of the year is always a great time to head into the marshes and flats. The water is clear and perfect for sight casting to your heart’s content.

February

The shallow water fishing bonanza blazes on in February as well. If you’re looking for something a bit different, check out the Sheepshead bite further out.

March

March can be a bit of a toss up depending on the year. If the weather gets too rough, you’ll have to stick with the reefs. Otherwise, Kingfishing will be on fire!

April

Those wanting a challenge can look forward to world-class Cobia fishing this time of year. Inshore anglers will have fun with Seatrout and Tripletail.

May

The Amberjack season typically opens in the beginning of May. If you’re in the area, we definitely suggest you find a boat and get to work!

June

The Elvis Festival in Tupelo draws in fans from all over the country. When it comes to fishing, Billfish are all the rage when summer hits.

July

Are you a competitive spirit? Then be sure to check out the famous Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. Fun fishing and generous prizes, what more do you need?

August

August here can be quite hot and humid, especially when you’re on the water. Those looking for a break from it all can go Flounder gigging in the evening.

September

You can afford to be flexible in September. The Sheepshead bite is starting up again and, if you go far enough, you’ll be rewarded with some great Tuna.

October

With the heat finally out of the way, it’s time to dig in and get some anging done. From Speckled Trout and Redfish to Amberjack – it’s a buyer’s market.

November

If you play your cards right and find a good spot, you can easily hit your limit for Redfish and Speckled Trout in just a few hours’ time!

December

Sheepshead and Black Drum are heading back to the bays, but that shouldn’t discourage you from going offshore. There’s nothing like a big Yellowfin to brighten up your day.

We were fishing just to catch fish. We caught a lot of catfish, a few croaker and one nice redfish. Our fishing experience was excellent! Next time we’ll fish for gamefish only. ?

Great area to fish for a wide variety of fish in shore or off shore. Check what fish are in season when you plan on visiting then pick your charter based on that.

Offshore in a boat this small is not for a newbie. We had two newbie friends with us and they are proud of the bragging rights they earned. Definitely a trip for fishermen who will brave rough conditions to get the best memories and fish. If ins one. You will have many tales to tell. PS- one of our newbies caught the biggest Red Snapper

As with any time of the year, great fishing on the Coast depends a lot on the weather conditions. Some months better than others but there are always plenty of fish to catch.

Don't come into the experience with a lot of preconceived ideas about what species to target or where to fish. Let the captain decide and trust they are trying their best to put you on some nice fish.
