Northern Pike are fast, toothy predators that thrive across Canada’s cold, clean waters. Anglers come for hard strikes, fierce runs, and the chance at true trophy fish. Vast lakes, clear rivers, and endless weed beds create ideal habitat from spring through ice season.

Most anglers succeed by casting large spoons, spinners, and jerkbaits along weed edges. Trolling, which means pulling lures behind a moving boat, covers water to find active fish. Fly fishing with big streamers works well in shallow bays. In winter, ice fishing with tip-ups, a simple device that flags when a fish bites, is popular.

Guided trips usually run on stable boats with quality tackle and leaders to prevent bite-offs. Beginners and families are welcome, while experienced anglers can chase personal bests. Dress in layers, bring polarized sunglasses, a rain jacket, snacks, and a camera. Expect quick action in spring shallows, steady summer bites near cabbage beds, and heavy fall fish feeding up.

Top areas include the shield lakes of Ontario and Quebec, the prairie lakes of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and the vast northern waters of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Productive options also stretch across interior British Columbia and big Ontario bays connected to the Great Lakes. Focus on weedy bays, rocky points, river mouths, and drop-offs.

Before your trip, check the local fishing license and permit rules for the province or territory. Review current seasons, harvest limits, and any barbless hook or bait restrictions. Regulations can vary by waterbody and change each year, so confirm details ahead of time.

    Great morning fishing

Had a great morning with Troy. He was very knowledgeable about where to fish; we had bites right from the start. Caught a bunch of northern pike and one or two walleye; our 14 year old son had a blast. Highly recommend for anyone looking to catch some fish and have a good time east of Calgary.
