Shad fishing in Durban is an extremely popular pastime activity. You will see scores of anglers line up around the beaches and piers, locked in surf fishing that is fun and exciting. Shad are incredibly tasty. Their nutrient rich flash makes quality table fare and Durban guides take pride in what seems to be a custom here. If you want to spice game fishing with something more of a local flavour, Shad should make it to the top of your list.

Where and when can I fish for Shad?

You can fish for Shad in Durban Harbour, along the entire coast up to the Richards Bay. Look for deep water behind and around sandbanks. La Lucia wreck is another popular destination and can yield Shad during winter and spring. Pay a visit to the Grannies Pool for some deep water. Fishing around Newsell Rocks and Bellamont Rock can get your bags filled in no time. And, these spots are not far from the city of Durban. Needless to say, these are just some of the hot spots. Durban boasts loads more. The best way is to fish with a local as they know how the tide works and what Shad will go after.

What's the best time for fishing?

You can get Shad in winter and spring, seemingly all over the place. Please note that Shad fishing is closed from October 1 until the end of November. From December till late September you will have a lot of opportunities to get them. Go either early in the morning or at dusk. Sardine is the most commonly used bait. The fresher, the better. Light tackle is the default weapon of choice.

What’s the limit?

Shad fisheries in Durban are under immense pressure. It’s really important to do your bit and help restore the fisheries. Start by informing yourself about the current bag and size limits. The limit is four specimens per angler per day. And they need to be over 30 cm in length to be eligible for keeping. Please return all other fellas back into the ocean.
