Tilapia fishing in Florida, United States is all about action in warm, shallow water. These hardy freshwater fish thrive in lakes, canals, and slow rivers across the state. Anglers target Tilapia for steady bites, great sight fishing, and tasty fillets.

Most trips use light tackle and small hooks with simple baits like bread, corn, or dough. Quiet approaches work best around shorelines, reeds, and culverts. On clear days, sight cast to cruising fish in knee‑deep water. Many captains also offer bowfishing after dark, using lights to spot Tilapia in the shallows.

Expect short runs close to shore, calm water, and lots of shots. This is a fun choice for families, first‑timers, and anyone who likes steady action. Captains usually provide rods, bait, and bowfishing gear when offered. Wear polarized sunglasses, a hat, and non‑skid shoes. Bring sunblock and drinks, and plan for warm, humid weather.

Statewide hotspots include the Orlando area chain of lakes, Lake Okeechobee shorelines, and canal systems around Miami and Fort Lauderdale. You can also find Tilapia in St. Johns River backwaters, along Space Coast canals near Cocoa and Titusville, and in west‑coast canals around Tampa Bay and Fort Myers. Look for shallow flats, vegetation lines, and warm outflows.

Regulations can change by water body. Always check local rules for licenses or permits, legal methods like bowfishing, and harvest guidelines before your trip. Your captain will help you follow current regulations.

(Saint Johns River 3 Person Panfish)

    Quality Time

Spent yesterday on a 4-hour fishing trip on the St Johns River with my Grandson and Son in Law guided by James Burke. We had a great time and caught several different kinds of fish. One was a 3.5 lb tilapia. James was a blast and knows the river like the back of his hand. We will book with James again in the future. Quality time.

Best day on the water! If you are looking for a day on the water with an experienced Captain, this is your guy! TJ was top notch! Booked this trip for my family (4 of us) and we had the best time! Caught lots of fish (peacock bass, largemouth bass, tilapia(rare), cichlid, and clown fish) and had a lot of laughs. We will definitely book this trip again on our next visit to WPB! Great memories!

    5/5 stars

Had an awesome time with Captain Manny. Hooked up on a couple peacocks and largemouth, and more than a few tilapia! Great guy, fun to fish with and hang out, fish weren’t really cooperating but he went the extra mile to put us on them. Saved his info to book him again next time I’m in South Florida!
