Tuna (Bluefin) Fishing in San Diego

Come summertime, anglers will be lining up at the dock to get a taste of the Tuna fishing San Diego is famous for. Bluefin Tuna is the ultimate trophy in these waters. It’s massive, it’s delicious, and it’s on pretty much everybody’s wish list around here. It was right of the coast of San Clemente Island that anglers caught a specimen which many believe to be largest Bluefin ever landed—a real whopper weighing in at 345.5 lbs.

San Diego’s Bluefin are in good company, with the likes of Yellowfin, Skipjack, and Albacore Tuna hanging around, too. For a chance to land any and all of these species, come aboard at the height of summer and catch the fish of a lifetime.

Where to Fish for Tuna in San Diego

The ocean surrounding San Diego is riddled with deep trenches, accompanied by steep banks sharply rising thousands of feet above the seafloor. Naturally, this is where many big game fish make their home, including Tuna. A day trip out of SD will bring you here to have a go at the Tuna fishing many anglers are eager to try.

If you’re ready to step it up a notch, set your sights on the Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands. Trips to these fishing grounds usually last 12 hours, since you’ll need to travel a good 20-40 miles just to get there. It’s worth the wait, seeing as these hot spots produce some legendary Tuna. That 345 lb Bluefin wasn’t the first to make himself famous here; in fact, Tuna everywhere owe their reputation to the Yellowfin hanging around Catalina Island, since it was these brutes who set contemporary big game fishing in motion.

Yet another place to try your luck is the Coronado Islands of Mexico, a little over 20 miles south of SD. Trips to these fishing grounds typically run 24 hours or longer and they’re not for the faint of heart, but you can expect to be duly rewarded for your perseverance. Out here you can experience the best Tuna fishing San Diego—or rather, Mexico—has to offer. The Bluefin haul gets better and better every year, followed by an abundant supply of Yellowfins and Skipjacks. Though they’ve grown scarce around here in recent years, Albacore are know to make an appearance, too.

San Diego Tuna Fishing Techniques

Trolling is the primary method of catching Tuna. Depending on the circumstances, your captain might recommend live bait or lures. Some anglers start by trolling to locate Tuna nearby and then draw them closer toward the boat with chum. This can result in a feeding frenzy, with lots of Tuna working up a fuss in the water. Once you’ve captured a Tuna’s interest, you can cast a hook baited with live Sardines, Anchovies, or a jig.

Anglers in San Diego also like kite fishing for Bluefin Tuna. Baits such as Yummy Flyers are live Mackerel work well with this method.
