Tuna (Bluefin) Fishing in New Jersey

With 130 miles of coastline facing the Atlantic, it’s no wonder that New Jersey fancies itself as a top saltwater fishing destination. New Jersey Tuna fishing charters will take you out to the deep waters to battle it out with Bluefin, Yellowfin, Bigeye, and Albacore Tuna. Strong, feisty, and able to take your line deep, these beasts will make you work hard for that tasty meat.

What to Expect

Fishing for Tuna is not for the faint-hearted. Spend upwards of eight hours on a boat in order to reach waters that are deep enough for Tuna. At a minimum of 40 miles offshore, you can start battling it out with these beasts, with longer trips taking you to the more fruitful waters over 100 miles offshore.

Even if you think you can handle 12–16 hours on a boat, you should have some experience with a rod in your hand to go Tuna fishing. Aboard a fully-equipped commercial or offshore sportfishing boat, you’ll spread the trolling lines in the water to maximize your chance of luring the bite, while chunking or chumming could lure the fish toward the boat, too.

You’d better be prepared to leap into action at a second’s notice. When the reels screech, get ready for an intense workout. These warm-blooded beasts will heave your line way down toward the bottom of the ocean and won’t give up without a fight.

Where to Go

Head out from the northern shore and you may have the chance of catching a Tuna closer to shore. During fall, the Bluefins come to the New York Bight, around 40 miles offshore, giving you the chance to land a Tuna on an eight-hour charter. Otherwise, you’ll want to head toward the continental shelf and Hudson Canyon, over 70 miles offshore from Point Pleasant Beach, to get your fill of all four Tunas.

Further down the coast, the fishing grounds are much quieter. Without the hordes of New Yorkers, you’ll be able to attract the Tuna more easily. If you’re lucky, you may be able to take advantage of the Gulf Stream just 40 miles out of Brigantine and Cape May. It’s a risk, as these waters aren’t always as fruitful. Most captains suggest going on longer trips, up to 24 hours long, where you’re sure to fill the boat with plenty of delicious Bluefins.

How to Prepare

Fortunately, you don’t need a license to fish in saltwater in New Jersey. Hop aboard any of New Jersey’s Tuna fishing charters and you’re good to go. Your captain will take care of all the fishing equipment needed, so all you need to do is bring some drinks and snacks aboard and settle in for a thrilling trip! Choose your charter and see for yourself.

"Offshore fishing on Megan Beth "

Richard Waschko fished with Megan Beth Sportfishing on August 26, 2018

We had a great day, captain Dan and mate Brian are 2nd to none. Captain Dan worked hard to find the fish. Booking a Striper trip this fall and another tuna trip next year. We will be booking all of our future trips on the Megan Beth.

"Fishing with Vince"

Christopher Mcandrew fished with Reel Sportfishing Charters on August 22, 2018

The captain and first mate were very professional. The weather on the ocean was unfishable, so we adjusted and went bay fishing. We had ~30 throwbacks and 2 keeper fluke. We are already planning a spring tuna trip. I won’t fish with anyone else from now on

"Day and a Half Trip with Capt. Mark Schrenk"

Justin Bewley fished with Jessie James Charters on September 29, 2017

From start to finish the trip was nothing but Amazing on the Jessie James. Our day was filled with 40-60lb yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi. By the end of the trip I thought my arms were going to fall off! I credit the day to the crews expertise and equipment. I will 100% be going out again on the Jessie James.
