In the Florida Keys, mangrove snapper usually spawn soon after the full moon in June. The fishing remains excellent through July and August. The larger mangroves head to the shallow patch reefs on the ocean side in massive schools. This is where the spawn takes place. Today, we anchored up on the ledge just south of Crocker Reef, 50-55ft. This is typically a yellowtail snapper spot & it still is but the mangroves are taking nearly 50% of the bite already. These are decent size, most today 15-17 inches, healthy fish. My clients took their fair share to Lorelei Restaurant for lunch, i took the leftovers to Dillons pub for lunch. One of my fav snapper times of the year.
