I began fishing at a very young age. I grew up on a lake near the Chattahoochee River in central GA. I spent all my free hours fishing! I don't know why I was so attracted to fishing, but from the first time I had a fishing rod in my hands, I was hooked! I hitch-hiked up the Alcan Highway to Alaska with some friends my junior year in college. I went home, graduated and went to a fishing show with a resume in my hand seeking a job in the fishing industry. I met a lodge owner that hired me as a 'beach hand' for his upscale lodge on the Cook Inlet in South Central Alaska. We worked hard every morning and fished hard every afternoon. I guided for the lodge the following 9 years, then started my own guide business in 2001. I met Mindy on the Kasilof River in 2004 and we got married and joined our fishing companies in 2008. I feel incredibly blessed to be part of such an amazing fishery in such an amazing place.

5 Hour Trip (AM) • 2 adultsOur recent fishing excursion on the Kasilof River was an absolute delight, thanks to the wonderful guidance of Mindy Payne. A Soldatna, Alaska native, Mindy not only shared her expertise on salmon fishing but also made the trip a deeply enjoyable experience with her warm personality and fascinating stories of Alaskan life. Although the timing of our trip (early in season) meant the fishing wasn’t overly productive, Mindy’s engaging presence more than made up for it. Her tales of family adventures, hunting, and the rugged beauty of Alaska brought an added richness to the experience, making it feel like much more than just a fishing trip. Mindy's deep knowledge of the river and the surrounding environment was evident, and her passion for the outdoors shone through in every conversation. Whether sharing techniques, discussing local wildlife, or simply chatting about life in Alaska, she made sure our time on the water was informative, fun, and genuinely memorable. Halibut Charter-- 6 Pack Boat • 4 adultsThis was the first time we fished for halibut. We booked an 8 hour charter. I was disappointed that the captain was late, but stuff happens. We have all been late to something before. It just kinda sucks, when you get up early and nudge the family along, pack and check out of the hotel. Arrive to the boat early, only to find that the crew is late. We left the harbor about two hours late. There are allot of boats out, it just gets you thinking that some of the better fishing spots may have been taken and the fish may be more active in the early morning. We stayed on the spit for a couple of days and some of charters bring their catch up near the Coal Point Trading Company for pictures and they had some very large halibuts. Starting late was the only issue. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable. They baited the hooks with frozen herring, gaffed the halibut and brought it into the boat. I appreciated the effort in trying to land a large halibut and persistence in getting the limit. It was beautiful day, could not ask for better weather. Boat and equipment was in good condition. The crew was very nice and professional. Good experience!

At the time that our deckhand called us, to inform us that the captain was missing, we were VERY worried about his safety and thought something must have happened. This situation had never happened before, and after many attempts to contact him, we immediately had a neighboring friend do a welfare check on him, at his home. We sincerely apologize and want you to know how uncharacteristic that situation was. We try to control what we can control, and timeliness is the top priority on that list. We do hope that you'll give us another shot and we hope to see you again in the future. We value your time, and you can bank that it won't happen again. In mid August the Kenai River begins to experience one of the worlds most incredible migrations. Silver salmon start to flood the lower tidewater sections fo the river, fresh from the Cook Inlet, Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific. As these fish move upstream they get "bitey" , snapping at each others tails, spinners sliding in front of them, pesky plugs wiggling in their path and jigs twitching through their peripheral vision. They just cant help themselves....they start snapping, getting hooked and almost always leaping straight out of the water towards the sky above!
As they hang in the air over the river's surface, anglers get their first glimpse at one of North America's premier fighting fish.
As if the bone jarring strike, long runs, and acrobatic leaps werent good enough....the mild, firm, and bright red flesh makes them amazing table fare!
These salmon will run from mid August until the end of October and are often part of a trophy rainbow, Dolly varden char and salmon combo trip.
