Background
I am a 3rd generation fisherman in Fort Lauderdale. I started in 1967 as a mate on one of the local drift boats. I fished with my dad who also worked the boat and taught me how to fish. When I was old enough, I began working as a mate on the sportfishing boats. As years past, I got my captain's license. I took a private sportfishing captain's job for about 8 years where the owner of the boat and I fished the Bahamas Billfish Championship tournaments, all through the Bahamas, Caribbean and south Florida. In 1994, I took out a $30,000 loan to buy a charter boat and start my own business, me and my sons. A couple years later, we bought a drift boat, the Catch My Drift and we've been drift fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale every day since. The Catch My Drift is Fort Lauderdale's largest and only air-conditioned drift boat. We run 3 trips every day and nobody fishes more than we do. There are several captains of the boat... me, my son Rod and my other son Andy, Stu and Billy.
Techniques
We drift fish on the reefs during the day, bottom fishing with chunks of squid, ballyhoo and sardines. We fish mainly for snappers, groupers and the whole array of small bottom fish that are good eating. On the day trips, you can also jig (no braided line allowed aboard) or you can flat-line. The mate will rig you up however you ask him to.

I went fishing on the catch my drift last week. I did a night fishing trip. It was a blast! The crew were spectacular.  Very knowledgeable and good with all ages!  The bathrooms were clean and there was a lot of room to move around on the boat.  I caught 6 yellowtail snappers myself and when we got back the crew fillet them for me.  I had a great time and would recommend this trip and company to anyone!

This trip was perfect for our young family. The price was right for an afternoon boat ride and fishin experience. Th directions and posting to get us to the dock was great and parking was within 50 feet of the checkin spot. The boat and equipment were very nice. The crew was friendly and accommodating to us and our young kids to set us up, train and help with our beginner fishing expertise. The boat ride in at sunset was really pretty and whole family had a great time! Thanks Catch My Drift!!

They went out with horrible conditions such as rain and large waves, making half of the guests soaked and sea sick. Meaning people lost out on money because they were throwing up the entire time!
Although I understand not being able to control mother nature, you can control going out and rescheduling. I feel that would have been better for future business instead of thinking about getting any dollar you can. Secondly, we didn’t target one species that was mentioned when we booked, conveniently for them what we did catch they kept for chum to catch shark. Not good

Alexander,

Thank you for fishing with us.  I am sorry the waves were big the day you went out and it rained.  We fish no matter what, every day.  Customers have to make up their own mind whether they want to come fishing or not.  You are always welcome to reschedule if you prefer to go on another day, but we sail no matter what.  Bonitos are one of the main fish that we fish for this time of year and while they are not good eating, they are a very strong gamefish that puts up a good fight.  We catch snappers as well, but this time of year the bonitos are biting the best.  We always fish for whatever is going to bite the best.  Our prices are less than the price of the water taxi, so for the money, there is no better deal for 4 hours of deep sea fishing on the ocean.  The fish don’t always bite, so it’s best to come out with the attitude that you will enjoy being on the ocean no matter how the fish bite that day.  We hope you come back and fish with us again.  Make sure to look at the weather for yourself and make up your own mind about the weather.  We never cancel the trip because it is a little wavy or rainy out.  Sea you next time!

We were just about to board the crowded boat to stand elbow to elbow with everyone else and had a bit of a sinking feeling.  Something was a little fishy.  Then, they asked us if we preferred a smaller charter boat that takes only 6 people.  Holy mackerel.  We were hooked.  We paid the extra fins to upgrade.  BEST DECISION EVER.
Only 6 people plus crew of Rod and Paul.
We spent 2 hours catching bait fish (about as big as anything else I have ever caught).  Then dropped lines looking for Moby Dick.  We ended up catching a 82” Golden Dusky Shark!!  Amazing.

More than 2/3 of the people were sea sick and throwing up over the side.  A handful of people never even attepted fishing!  Perhaps there should be some sort of rating based on sea conditions.  Total waste of money, kids didnt catch a fish and we were all throwing up.  The picture should tell you how we felt.

Thank you for fishing with us Michael.  I am sorry you guys got seasick.  I used to get seasick myself and I know how it feels.  I saw the catch pictures from some of the fish caught today, some nice ones were caught by those fishing.  The boat is a big boat, the largest fishing boat in Ft Lauderdale, so it handles the seas well, but even on calm days people sometimes get seasick.  I wish today was calmer for you.  I’m sorry you’re family got seasick.  I hope you come back out with us on a calmer day.

I am an avid fisherman and this trip was not what i expected. We barely went out from the inlet and caught baby fish.

What disturbed me even more was thst anytime a short fish was caught, both mates would unhook them and throw them right in the direction of pelicans who gobbled them up. How stupid.
I mean a 7 inch strawberry grouper just wasted for no good reason, Dont they know replenishing the bio stock is linked to thier livlihoods as mates. I was so pissed, i unhooked my own fish and made sure i released them away from the pelicans. I must have seen 35 shorts get eaten,....shame on you mates to take thier lives

Hi John,

Thank you for fishing with us.  I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy yourself on the trip.  As the trip description clearly says, we target the small reef fish such as snappers, porgies, grunts, triggers and jacks… all the small bottom fish on the reef.  This is a trip that takes out lots of people so we are targeting numbers of fish, not size.  As for the pelicans, pelicans are super aggressive.  They dive bomb anything you throw in the water.  We try to release them but if the pelicans eat them, that’s just nature.  I have no control over the pelicans.  We caught a lot of fish on the trip that day, most of them shorts but a lot of keepers too.  Again, thank you for fishing with us and I am sorry about the pelicans.  I wish the pelicans allowed the small fish to swim home freely, but that’s just the brutal side of nature.

the boat should have at least coffee available for sale.
we caught at least half a dozen fish that could be kept and filleted and expected them to be available at the end of the trip. they were not and after waiting for 20 minutes or so after docking still no organized plan I could see to retrieve the fillets so we just left feeling we had been taken as far as the expectations that were advertised. This was not helped by seeing one of the crew handing a plastic bag with a large number of fillets to one of the passengers inside the cabin long before the ship had docked. (more than he or even 3or 4 people could have caught )  .Finally the pitch to tip the crew saying this is the only way they support and feed their families, and broadcast over the PA system at least three times was tacky, and certainly didn’t paint the ship’s operator in a favorable light.
However our party of nine did have a good time and the boat and crew were fine.

I booked this trip for my teenage Floridian Nephews and sister who have never fished on a boat before.  The boat was a good size, 85 feet, clean and geared to go. The crew were cheerful and helpful. Me and one nephew caught a fish, and a few others on the boat. Everything is ready to go and they had bait properly cut up in plastic cups and first mates were there to assist. ONLY glitch I had was that I had booked with FISHINGBOOKER and they confirmed my reservation. When I went to the dock to get on the boat, the boat rep did NOT have our reservations. They said this sometimes happens but luckily we were early enough and were able to get on the boat. Please have FISHINGBOOKER and Catch My Drift communicate better on reservations. Had we come later, we wouldn’t have been able to get on the boat and I would have been very upset since we were confirmed. Otherwise, it was excactly the PRICE point and experience I was looking for in a 1/2 day fishing trip.

We had a great fishing trip.  I do wish that there was more than one person helping to bait the line and to help get the fish off of the line.  We all caught a couple of fish which none were big enough to keep.  That was disappointing as well.  There was a guy on our tour that was catching fish that goes three to four days a week.  i thought that was a bit unfair…

I flew in from Texas with my wife and wanted to fish before we left on our Cruise the next day. We had made the reservations earlier in the week. Unfortunately the weather was uncooperative and the Captain had to cancel the trip due to Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings and 8-10 foot seas. What made my experience so great was that not only did I get a refund of my deposit, the Captain also told me about some local fishing docks that rent poles and gear. Directions of how to get to them and what fish they catch off the piers. He could have just said sorry we aren’t going here is your deposit, nope. He went beyond that and let a lost tourist know where he could still get some fishing in even if he was not going to get my money to fish. I will be returning to Florida and My wife and I have vowed that we will use the Catch My Drift when we do. Outstanding Service even when you are not a paying customer lets me know what outstanding hands I will be in when I am.

had to ask what to do the crew did not seem to be intrested in people who had never fished before .and thee captain asked twice for us to TIP the crew between $8-10 each person , far to many people on boat all lines were tangled , staff stood waiting for tips as we got off the boat .

We went on a sport fishing trip with captain Rod and his one man crew they where great.  We didn’t catch many fish on that trip but it wasn’t because of lack of trying they worked really really hard to put us on fish it was just one of those days.  We where really impressed at how hard they worked.  Two days later went on the catch my drift for the night anchor trip captain Billy and his crew did just as great job taking care of all the other people fish as they could have we would recommend both trips to anyone that is interested in going 5*care

I would give the equipment and boat 5 stars but the website indicated there is a full galley on board. If there is, I sure couldn’t find it! Luckily I brought my own drinks and snacks so if you decide to go, do the same!
