We had a great time with Adam. I was worried some of our inexperienced fishers wouldn’t get a chance to feel one on the line. We all ended up getting at least 6 onto the boat. He was very easy going and didn’t get upset with all of our uneducated questions and comments. He was attentative and friendly, if we come back we will definitely be going with this company again.

My wife and adult daughters have done a lot of inland fishing in Florida.  We really wanted to fight some bull reds given the time of year, despite the need to do a lot of bird chasing. Captain J.J. gave us exactly what we asked for notwithstanding the challenging weather.  We caught what we came for and would definitely rebook!

Had a great day with Capt. J.J. On The Soggy Bottom.  The weather was working against us in the beginning…trips being rescheduled. But, Capt. J.J. fit us in before our vacation was over.  We hit our first spot and immediately started catching fish.  Had one on before the second pole even got in the water. There we caught several kingfish. From then on it was steady catching. Our trip was a short four hours, but packed with action. We boated bonita, grouper, kings and snapper consistently.  That just goes to show you that you don’t need to charter a big boat to catch fish and have a good time. Capt. J.J. knows his business and is very good at what he does.  I will charter The Soggy Bottom every time I’m in Destin.
Lots of fun!  Thanks again J.J.

Thank you for your business Chris I enjoyed having you guys out fishing with me!  For the record catching bait is included in every trip we offer. When we Gulf fish we have bait boats that sell live minnows, so we offer you the option to buy them from the bait guy or stop and catch them ourselves. I always recommend buying them because some days the baits not there or they don’t bite and when they get tough you can eat up an hour of fishing time trying to catch bait…. Some days the bait guy can’t even catch them, so we were very fortunate to have that option. Four hours is a short amount of time and trolling was the best option for your trip because most bottom fish are out of season and the trolling has been pretty hot, and if I remember we had a great catch doing so. Unfortunately sometimes the bite can be tough and every bite counts so usually I grab the rod first when trolling because I know a few tricks to get them back on the line when they bite short as some days they do. Next time you guys are down I’ll be sure to keep a rod in everyone’s hand the entire time and show you some different types of fishing we offer that may be a little more your style! Hope to see you guys again soon! -Capt. J.J. Botelho

Took my son, daughter and daughters boyfriend (all in their 20’s) fishing with JJ this morning. We had an awesome time and JJ knows his stuff. No fish finder or calls to other boats to find fish, he knows his spots and hooked us up on 6 King Mackerel and several snapper. We did slow trolling, free casting and bottom fishing. He kept us moving and for a 4 HR trip we pretty much had action the whole time. Great personality and just a great guy. We will definitely be back again!

We had a great experience with Captain JJ.  We caught more fish than all the other boats that were around us.  We wanted a smaller boat, like Captain JJ’s, instead of the larger boats, so that is what we were prepared for.  We got our limit of king mackerel, which got us a meat to take home.  We caught a bunch of other fish as well (a couple sharks, bonito, amberjack), most of which we did not keep.  Captain JJ has a good attitude and interacted with us a lot.

For reference, we went on the morning trip.  We bought bait on the way out, instead of catching it.  We were busy the whole time.  Nature cooperated with us as well, as we had fish and calm waters.

We had a good experience with fishingbooker as well.  As an aside, something that fishingbooker.com could do a better job of explaining is that in the Destin area it is customary to tip the crew 15-20% of the trip cost, as many captains do not own their own boats.

Thanks Captain JJ for a great trip.

Mr. Howard,

Thank you for fishing with us aboard the Soggy Bottom II. I apologize for anything you felt may not have been up to par. Unfortunately 6 people on a 22 ft center console is crowded, so I do apologize there. If I remember correctly we were limited as to where we can fish due to high winds that day so we didn’t have many options. I also remember nobody was catching anything that day so 10 keeper 3-8 lb fish may have been slow for you guys, but we did end up better than most others that day. We also caught enough keeper fish to feed the 16 people you had said you needed to…. As a captain we have those days where mother nature limits us as to what we can do and where we can go so we constantly have to play the cards we are dealt. I can assure you we do lots of different types of fishing throughout the year… not much of which can be accomplished from the shore. The price of our trips is similar to every boat our size in the fleet and in most cases cheaper than the next.  Booking a trip is all about the experience. We have days where the fish don’t bite I guess that’s why they don’t call it catching…. But, a great captain will work hard and do anything in his power to find a bite and keep you on it.  Any time you book a trip you take a risk of the fish not biting no matter who’s boat it is. So please be aware of this before booking any boat to go fishing. And please consider the weather carefully as mother nature is known to throw us curve balls.

We planned for a 6 hour trip but the winds prevented that.  We fished for 2 hours and caught fish but still got charged for 4 hours, didn’t quite understand that but I guess it is what it is.  Captain was nice and did a good job cleaning and packing fish.  Plenty of sheepshead to eat now.

Thanks again for bringing your family down I had a wonderful time with you guys!! Just to clear the air a normal 4 hr trip contains approx. 2-3 hours of fishing time. We generally have to run further to find fish but due to high winds we were unable to do so. Luckily the bite was on fire close where we were able to fish. Also, on most days we spend the first 30-45 minutes catching bait, but do to the lack of bait this early in our season I had already purchased bait for the trip prior to leaving the dock. I do apologize for shortening your 6 hr scheduled trip due to weather, but mother nature has been tough on us this year. Our only option due to where we were catching fish becoming too rough to fish anymore was to fish near the marinas in the harbor which doesn’t produce much fish this time of year. I didn’t want to waste your time/money so I had to make the call…I did see to It that your deposit was also discounted for the right price and charged you accordingly to our normal rates. I believe we caught nearly 20 - 30 Sheephead which I can assure you is a special day of fishing, as some times we don’t catch that many on 6 hours of fishing. I do apologize sincerely if you felt I was wrong and will gladly give you an extra hour free on your next trip with us to make up for it! Thanks again!

We’re fairly new to fishing, but had an outstanding time with Capt J.J. Botelho aboard the Soggy Bottom II. (Much better than those larger boat charters where people are shoulder-to-shoulder on board.) He helped each of us with all the tricks of the trade to get the most from our trip and with his knowledge on where the fish would be biting, we had almost non-stop action. Despite iffy weather conditions, we all had a great time!  I would definitely recommend this trip for anyone and we’ll be looking him up on our next trip to Destin.

Our family recently traveled to Destin to escape the Texas heat for a week. Before traveling, I did a lot of research on fishing guides on fishingbooker and decided to go with Destin’s Ultimate Guide Service based on the reviews. The owner and captain of the Soggy Bottom II, J.J. Botelho was top notch. I don’t fish often but I’ve been on several bay/inshore charters (Charleston, SC & Port Aransas, TX) in the last couple years. This was my wife’s first time ever to go fishing and he immediately put her at ease. Captain J.J. was professional, easy going, entertaining, and gave all of us an awesome experience. His boat and gear were in great condition. We were blessed with great weather, calm waters, and tight lines. He knew exactly where to go and made our bait fishing fun and quick. We immediately came around to a cove and were hitting Bull Reds and Sail Cats for a couple hours. Highly recommend Captain J.J. and Destin’s Ultimate Guides!

Captain JJ is a nice and respectful young man that worked very hard to make sure that my family had a great experience.  I had been on the docks the day before and overheard several captains telling each other that the fishing had been pretty hard due to a full moon.  Captain JJ had a plan for the day that he explained clearly to us on our way out and executed it masterfully.  He had us on a good bite right away and we landed 9 fish during our trip.  We could have landed a bunch more but it took us a while to get the hang of this type of fishing!  I would definitely recommend Captain JJ to anyone that wants to have a great experience while fishing in Destin!!!

My Family and I had Great Time with Capt JJ, we had several bites to begin with which was really exciting, then we started landing fish, we caught several fish but only 3 we could keep since the majority we were catching were out of season but still a blast catching all those fish! We ended the day with our 17 year old hooking into a 200lb + SHARK! Which we all fought for 45 min on 60lb line with a 30lb leeter, It finally broke off when it got close to the boat, we were going to cut it loose anyway so it just did it for us!  It was awesome and my two boys, wife and I had a BLAST with Capt.
