- Hooked on Kauai specializes in two different fishing techniques: "whipping" and "dunking". These two styles of fishing were developed to handle the different kinds of habitat here on the islands. Whipping is the practice of casting top-water and mid-water lures over coral reefs and deep-water locations using a 8-9 foot fishing pole with a spinning reel. Dunking consists of casting out a 5-8 ounce lead weight with a leader and baited hook coming off of a swivel about 24' up from the lead or 2 feet from the sandy ocean bottom. Dunking poles use heavier tackle and can range from 10 - 13 feet in length. Each approach is targeting different fish in the water column therefore increasing the chance of getting a strike. Both techniques are simple in concept but do require a good amount of strength and stamina.
