We had an absolute blast cod fishing at the Farallon Islands. We were originally supposed to go salmon trolling but since the season was winding down and counts were low, Captain Justin offered this alternative.

The entire trip from start to finish was incredible experience, with great views of the Bay Area and a unique journey out towards the islands. The captain and first mate Ron were very knowledgeable and helpful, especially to our beginner group. They made sure we had a good time and caught lots of fish, including a MONSTER lingcod.

The weather was fine but it is cold out there. The sun doesn’t shine. And it takes a while to get there. The waves were relatively small the day we went. It wasn’t that windy. One of our group got sick. We had a few tangles (mostly due to my braided line). Apparently braided line floats. We only caught one ling cod. And not one of those things was in the Captain’s control.

What was in the Captain’s control was all great. The boat had all the facilities you’d need and was clean. The first mate, Ron, was amazing. Captain put us on the fish. We caught our limit of rock fish within 90 minutes and therefore had to stop fishing for cod too. (You can’t continue to fish for cod when you’ve caught all your rock fish.) But due to our speedy success, we were able to fish for salmon on the way in and bagged three of those too.

Real dramamine is a must so your trip is not a bust. (Non-drowsy ginger tablets won’t cut it.)

Haven’t gone deep sea fishing in the Bay Area in 20 years, my husband, had never been.  So for my birthday this year, took the day off work and decided I wanted to hit the water and went with Justin and the Durban Princess Sport Fishing for some Reel Fun. 

Best decision I could have made as I had the best birthday ever!

Went for Salmon to the usual spot but it was slow day for all boats.  We caught one salmon and snagged a random rockfish nowhere near the bottom (he’s important later).  We were in walls and walls of bait but no fish.  Justin switched us up to an alternative location and worked to get us 3 total Salmon before heading in for the day. 

We had a fabulous time on the water and Justin was great helping us newbs and keeping us on target.  Cleaned our fish on return.  We are so happy and will be back. 

I really wanted a day on the water and fish for the freezer. I came out with a whole salmon I’ll be grilling for a birthday BBQ with some Mango salsa.  Froze another whole salmon for future grilling later this summer.  The third salmon I processed into 9 lbs of cleaned 4oz fillets to fill the freezer, plus a huge fish head with meat for steaks and cheeks I can’t wait to get into. 

And that random rockfish, well, I turned him into some ceviche to enjoy while I processed my catch.  Amazing day.  Thank you Justin.  Can’t wait to come back.

My dad, my son, and I had an amazing adventure on the Codfather. Justin and Joe’s expertise and knowledge of the area was outstanding. They made the trip remarkable as much as it was successful. All the gear and instruction was provided along with help and guidance in the right ways. They are the definition of top notch in my book, thank you.  Definitely looking to make this an annual trip with them going forward.

This was my first time going out and it was for my birthday. I had a blast!
