The cooler weather is bringing our winter time fisheries. Live bait has been plentiful. Pelagic species including Blackfin tuna and mackerel are pushing in shallower towards the reef line. Makes for less commute and more fishing time! Inshore bite has been steady with impressive numbers and size of a verity of species. Cobia have been found on the wrecks. Big muttons in the shallow waters of the backcountry, and quality yellowtail and lane snappers on the patch reefs. With exception of a few days, the wind has been blowing 20mph+ everyday for the last two months. Luckily our 24’ Sailfish is flexible enough to fish not only open water, but also allows us to hide from the winds in the calm, scenic backcountry waters. The bite has been on fire with a verity of snappers, jacks, and no shortage of sharks. We like to call these trips “dinner and a show”. Every get plenty to eat, and our marnia does a great job of “cook your catch”. One last great thing about this fishery on a wi dy day, is that we have a no sea-sickness guarantee. This month was a real mixed bag on our 24’ trolling, bottom fishing, reefs, backcountry, and lobster territory. Bottom fishing in the shallow/ calm backcountry has produced some high quality mangrove, lane, and mutton snappers in large numbers. Some trips catching their allowed limits. No shortage of big 100lb + lemon sharks that you’ll need to race for your dinner. Nicer weather days we have fished on the patch reefs just south of Key West. Red grouper, yellowtail snapper, and a verity of types of mackerel. Even did a catch n cook woth spadefish (a first for me). If you have lobster on your mind, well so do we! Many of our shallow water honey holes have been picked clean this late in the season. 6hr + lobster trips gave us enough time to run 20+ miles to areas with less pressure and they are still housing some quality bugs.
