This was my 3rd time booking with this outfitter. No where else in Cancun can you get the experience of light tackle. Trolling tends to bore my family unless the action is super hot and if the sea is at all rough, forget it. Huge advantage of fishing the lagoon besides all of the amazing wildlife is that it’s mostly sheltered from the weather that makes nearshore or offshore fishing intolerable for anyone prone to sea sickness. We always catch fish (these are still exciting salt water species) and love the options of spinning gear vs fly vs live bait. We will be back.

Opted for a 4 hour1 person fly fishing trip on the lagoon.  Martin was very accommodating on equipment and the selection of top quality rods was impressive.  Maurice the guide knew the lagoon like the back of his hand.  Had some snoop follow but no takes, and he provided some great advice on my casting technique (double haul), which I am now admit needs a lot of work!  After 2 hours moved and marks, and started spinning (after 2 hours 8 weight fly - ineffciently) and had a barracuda and several takes.  Great afternoon out!

Took a trip with my 12 year old and was a blast,  Noel was our guide and he made it a fun and relaxing trip.  Knew all the best spots and was very informative.  I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone especially people with kids and those that get sea sick.  You stay a lagoon so the water is generally very calm. Thanks again Noel and Martin!

Guide found Tarpon for me within 20 minutes, and I casted at rising Tarpon over the next 3 hours, 6 good hits, landing 2, another 2 broke me off (maybe a barracuda, who knows) and I lost a great one as it jumped acrobatically a good 4 feet or more in the air. . .  later he put me on snook. . .  Taking a break for 2 days and going again with the same guide.

We had a 4 hour afternoon session in early January 25.

Fishing took place in the Cancun lagoon area which is sheltered but we had serious winds so even this area was a bit choppy. To our surprise the boat did not have a trolling motor but the guide was professionally keeping us at the right spots with a long pole despite the winds and strong currents, so this was very well done, fishing was comfortable.

The trip started on time at 3pm with a 10 minute ride to the first spot. We did not have many bites in at start so we always switched spots after 20-30 minutes if there was no or just a few bites. Short boat ride between spots took max. 5-10 minutes.

During the 4 hour trip we fished several (around 6-7 spots) that were mostly similar, drifting on the edge of the mangroves in casting distance, shallow water. We do not use fly fishing gear so at booking we requested light spinning gears which were provided in good condition and set up for us, ready to cast with plastic baits.

In the first 3 hours of the trip we caught only 2-3 fish (small barracuda and snook) but I also had a few actions that got off the hook before reaching the boat so fishing was moderately eventful. I expected a bit more at this point though we were new to this type of lagoon fishing so a more experienced fisherman may have had better success.

Be prepared that you have to make precise casts to the edge of the mangroves to get more bites. This was not a problem for us but due to winds we tangled up on the mangroves a few times. This was not a problem the guide was very helpful and got it free every time without a remark. He also checked our lures and leader often and changed them if they got bitten or damaged.

We thought we were about to end the trip with only a few fish caught, when the guide finally found a perfect spot and we still had around 30 mins left. This spot had many fish, we had bites on almost each cast. There we caught some snook and grouper which all fought well and most landed in the boat for a photo. Unfortunately sun was down and lights got low so we had to end our trip there but still, with this last spot, the trip turned out to be awesome. Trip ended almost exactly on time at 7pm.
