Cancun Light Tackle & Fly Fishing Tours operates trips of a variety of lengths among the secluded waters of the Nichupte Lagoon. Conveniently located right in the Cancun Hotel Zone, the area is filled with a huge variety of table and game species that are just waiting to be caught. It is also perfect for children and those suffering from seasickness, as the waters are calm and sheltered.
During your trip you can learn all about handling the fly and spinning gear you will be using. Spinning gear is perfect for children to learn on, while the vast selection of fly fishing favorites makes this a great location for even the most seasoned angler. Target Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook, and Ladyfish in the shallows, or head to deeper waters to fish for big Jack Crevalle, Barracudas, Snappers, and more.
The vessel you will be fishing aboard is a 17’ Maverick HPX flats boat. She was built in 2016 and is the ideal fishing platform for these calm, shallow waters. The vessel can carry two adult guests and can cruise at an impressive 25 knots.
You will be supplied with quality fly and spinning tackle, and a selection of lifelike lures and flies to attract the wide range of target species. Your captain will teach you all about how to handle the equipment and the fish and will make sure everyone on board gets a chance of some great catches, whatever your age or skill level. There’s an additional dock fee of US$10 per person.

Full Day Trip (Apr - Nov)
Summary: If you love to fish, book this trip! You will not regret it!!! Details for others considering: Typically in Mexico people go for the deep sea trips but trolling or bottom fishing all day can get boring, especially since it was off season for some game fish when we went, so we took a chance trying something different with this light tackle bay trip. From previous reviews I made sure to specify what we wanted to do/what species we’d like to target during the day so they could bring the right tackle and gear, which for us doing the all day trip, was a little of everything. Martin patiently answered all my questions on the app prior to the trip and we felt prepared going in. Make sure to bring cash to pay the balance & tip. We took a short Uber from our hotel (cheaper than a cab). Martin and our captain Noel greeted us in the morning when we arrived, they were all ready to go, and we were on the water in 15 minutes. Noel was super knowledgeable, showed us the lures and technique to use and put us on Tarpon right away. Let me tell you, seeing all the rolling Tarpon in the morning for several hours up the the mangroves was one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced in my life <3 We hooked into a few and had every opportunity to catch one. Unfortunately it didn’t work out this time but we knew going in that Tarpon are notoriously difficult to land. If you are going for Tarpon, these guys will put you on them but know that you will only land 1 out of 10 on average and that’s just how it is. Noel then grabbed some live bait with a throw net and we went for other species. We caught snook, ladies, snapper and I got quite the fight landing a blue runner. Overall we caught fish in a beautiful place and had a blast! My boyfriend and I both fish regularly and have experience with spinners so we stuck to what we were good at and didn’t do any fly fishing on this trip. I would recommend you have some fishing experience, like at least feel confident casting, to get the most out of a trip like this because you’ll be working with lures and potentially live bait. I’m sure it would be fun either way as the crew totally know what they are doing but that’s my opinion. Book it now!

3/4 Day trip (PM)
My best friend and I escaped the resort and booked w Martin and we didn’t regret it. His service was very good and very friendly. We caught multiple species. I would say if you are not a fly fisherman than communicate that up front. Don’t get out there and waste your time with the wind and dropping a fly 6 inches from a mangrove edge for a paid charter. Mauricio was an amazing guide but he is not geared towards training you about fishing more so putting you on and around fish. We switched to spinning 2 hours into our trip and began having a great day!! Best of luck, we will definitely be booking again!!

Half Day Trip (PM)
My girlfriend and I had a great day of fishing with our captain Mauricio. We first started out in the mangroves with a fly rod, which I have no experience with. Mauricio offered some pointers, but it wasn't clicking and we switched over to spinning gear. Within 10 minutes of switching I landed my first tarpon. After no more bites for about an hour, we headed out to open water to try for snapper, jack, and snook. In our first spot we each caught a handful of mutton snapper over the course of an hour. We then moved closer to the mangroves again, this time with live bait that Mauricio secured with a cast net. We landed another tarpon, multiple jacks, 2 snook, and a few barracuda. Mauricio was great all day, very helpful with my girlfriend who has minimal experience, and he was also very funny. Overall we would definitely book another charter if we end up back in Cancun.

Had Noel as our guide for a 6 hr trip, he's an excellent guide. Answered all of my questions happily and helped me land the various species that I'm not used to dealing with. Short ride through the lagoon for all of the spots. Put us on fish at each place we went to, Had some chances sight casting a few tarpon but couldn't make the connection, though it was still awesome to see them rolling and taking a swipe at my lures. Had a very successful time sight casting snook, I think we landed about 8. Also had a chance to catch several barracuda on the top water which is always exciting. I'd consider myself an intermediate-advanced saltwater angler and Noel tailored the trip perfectly to my skills, but also helped with working on skipping lures under mangroves which we don't really do in Texas. My wife doesn't really fish so I'm not sure how the trip would have been if she wanted to fish as most of what we were doing was quite a bit more advanced for someone that doesn't fish, but I'm sure Noel would have figured something out. Definitely would be worth having a conversation before booking if you don't fish much. Overall, very happy with the trip and had a blast. Will definitely book again next time I come to the area.

Half Day Trip - Apr-Nov (AM)
I booked an early am trip for my brother and I. The day before the weather didn't look appealing to us and we were able to move to the following day without any issues. The next morning was beautiful. We started fly fishing so Noel took us to an area that was out of the wind. My brother hooked a nice Tarpon but just couldn't land it. Decided to try some light tackle fishing so we went and caught some live bait and caught probably 15-20 speckled trout. Noel was an excellent guide and put us on fish. Would highly recommend will definitely use again if ever in Cancun.
