Gavito – Sportfishing Fishing Reports
October 8, 2020
Luke and his family booked a 4 hour Bottom Fishing trip with us. As it turned out, Emelie had a great talant for fishing and was the clear winner of this trip! We all had a great day fishing along the south coast of Maderia Island.
First fishing trip after lockdown!
May 27, 2020
Finally, we can go out fishing again!! After 10 weeks in lock down using the time for maintenance and upgrades on the Gavito, yesterday we did our first fishing trip. We left the marina at 1500 hours and put out a full spread targeting tuna. The conditions looked promising and we headed west towards Ponta do Pargo After an hour of trolling we had a short hit on the shotgun. Five seconds later the fish hit it again and started to pull line fast! The excitement lasted for about 30 seconds when the fish said “thank you and goodbye” and got of the hook…. But still, this was very encouraging! In order to get some fish on the dinner table we took off to one o our favourite spots for bottom fishing an slow pitch jigging which resulted in a number of species such as Bared Hogfish, Red Rock fish, Lizard fish and different species of bream. After a few hours of fishing we returned to the marina happy to have been able to go out again and very happy with the improvements of the Gavito. We are going out soon again! Temperature air: 24C Temperature water: 24,5C Wind: 8 knots Wind direction: North
Honeymoon and Amberjack
November 5, 2019
Essi and her husband had booked a half day Sport Fishing on the Gavito. As it turns out they were spending their honeymoon in Madeira and what could be better than to spend some time with the Gavito crew fishing! We left Calheta Marina at 1500hrs. It was a bit windy and some swell coming in from the Atlantic. We decided to start the trip trolling, targeting Amberjack and Wahoo. We were trolling close to the shore, doing 7-8 knots and after 10 minutes, BAM! An Amberjack hit the shotgun! After slowing down a bit, Essi’s husband went into the chair working the AJ. After a short but exciting fight he landed the fish. What a great start! We kept on trolling the shoreline but without further success. Reaching Ponta do Sol, we decided to stop for some Bottom Fishing. After working the area for a bit, we decided to head back towards Calheta. Close to Arco do Calheta, we made another stop for Bottom Fishing. A successful stop indeed, catching a variety of fish; Pargo, Red Snappers, Trigger Fish etc. We ended the trip watching the sun go down as we boated back to the Marina. We do hope that this was a great day to remember for the happy couple!
A HAT TRICK OF AMBERJACKS
September 21, 2019
Jon had booked a 1/2 day bottom fishing on "Gavito" but as the weather was a little inclement at the start we decided to troll towards Funchal, then bottom fish and afterwards troll back to the marina. On the way to the bottom fishing grounds we caught a small Amberjack trolling with a 6" Williamson Dorado Catcher "Luna" colours and this gave the client come pleasure. We then bottom fished and caught Red Snapper, Red Grouper and Thick lipped Bream. Trolling back we caught a couple more amberjacks on the troll. So all in all the day was succdessful and the client was happy and that is all that counts in our minds.

David and his son Matt chose a 1/2 day bottom fishing trip with Gavito. We left the marina a 1130 hrs. to catch the incoming tide. We motored to the West end of the Island and started to fish some of our favourite spots but the fish were a bit scarce and not very big. So as they had only 4 hours I decided after discussion with them to try trolling inshore at 10 knots with pink jet head heavy lures. As you can see from the photo this paid off and although technically the trip should have been more expensive it was the Captains choice and therefore the clients had no additional cost. They were both happy that they had a decent fish which after photo's were taken was released back.
Mixed fishing at it's best.

Paul and 3 friends joined Gavito last Wednesday and again on Friday for 2 full days of Mixed Fishing. Firstly you should also check out the report for the 800 lbs Marlin which they caught on Wednesday. They did not have the same success on Friday with trolling but had a good number of Red Snapper (see photo), trigger fish, grouper and barred hog fish with the addition of 1 Blue Fish. We fished on the incoming tide as is the way with Gavito (regardless of time of high water) as this gives the very best opportunities for catching good fish. We also supply a packed lunch and free drinks n board comprising water, juices and soft drinks and beer. Yet again our clients left happy having thoroughly enjoyed the day as did the Crew.
