Cold Weather, Hot Fishing: Nanaimo Fishi
Cold Weather, Hot Fishing: Nanaimo Fishi
January 19, 2023
Over the past few weeks, Chinook salmon fishing in Nanaimo has been the best I've seen in my years as a fishing guide. The quantity of fish has been amazing. And the quality is getting better day by day. Today in just under 2 hours, we had our limit of Chinook, one topping the scale at 12 lbs (that's good for a winter spring!). What really stands out about this year is that these fish seem to be everywhere. In the past two weeks, we have fished the south end of Gabriola Island all the way south to the Brick Yard and have hooked fish at every location. Today, just to test fate, I fished as close as legally possible the Harbor mouth and still managed to find fish. They just seem to be everywhere. Another encouraging sign is that most of these fish are hatchery. This is good news for anglers. It shows that the hatchery programs across the Pacific Northwest are really working. For a reel good time, book your next fishing adventure with us in Nanaimo. Retention is 2 per angler until the end of March. After April 1st, there is a very good chance this fishery will close until July 15, 2023. Also, keep in mind that with Reel Time Fishing Charters, 5% of every trip goes back into salmon restoration through the Pacific Salmon Foundation. As we like to say at Reel Time..., "Experience the Wonder, Invest in its Future." Captain Turk (Andrew Turkstra) Owner and operator of Reel Time Fishing Charters & Marine Tours

What anglers said about fishing in British Columbia

I didn't know it was peak season for salmon when I went, and even though we didn't catch anything, I had a great time out on the water with Roy. You can't expect to catch a bunch of fish every time you go fishing, that's not the point. I made a new friend today, and that's more important.

We were a bit late in the season and we were not able to keep the wild Coho we caught. We would not have been able to eat more than the Spring we kept anyway since we are on holiday's. It was an enjoyable day on the boat regardless.

Be ready for any weather. Always remember it is called "fishing "not "catching" so never be disappointed if you don't get a limit just enjoy what you do catch and the amazing beauty of the north coast..

Fantastic place to fish as we were within ten minutes from the marina allowing more time for the rods to be in the water for Salmon fishing. I highly recommend the Sooke area and we will be back again.

Go out with a captain who knows where the fish are because it is easy to waste the day fishing empty waters.

Amazing salmon fishing! Give yourself plenty of time to figure out the conveluted online fishing license website. As a non Canadian resident, halibut is not allowed in the waters around sooke. If you want halibut and Salmon, port Renfrew is the place to be from what I understand. If in sooke, book with Travis!
